The Camden Webcam looks out from the grounds of the Camden Yacht Club on Bay View Street, at the edge of Camden Harbor in Midcoast Maine. A railed seawall walkway runs up from the bottom of the frame toward the club’s shingled 1912 clubhouse, with a granite pier, a small lawn and a tall flagpole off to its left. Beyond them the outer harbor fills the left half of the picture: rows of moored sailboats and powerboats, a small rocky islet and a far shore lined with masts. In the boating season a dinghy float and gangway sit just below the wall, packed with tenders that rise and fall with the tide against the wooden pilings. In autumn the floats are craned out of the water, as they were in mid-October 2026, and only the bare pilings are left.

About Camden and Its Yacht Club

Camden is a town of 5,232 people (2020 census) in Knox County, on Penobscot Bay about 113 kilometers (70 miles) northeast of Portland in a straight line and 12 kilometers (7.6 miles) north of Rockland. European settlement began around 1771 and 1772, after the French and Indian War, and the town was incorporated on February 17, 1791. In November 1892 a fire driven by strong easterly winds destroyed the business district. The harbor found a new trade in 1936, when Captain Frank Swift started the cruise schooner business that grew into the windjammer fleet still operating from the town today.

The yacht club was founded in 1906 by a group that included George B. Phelps, Cyrus H. K. Curtis and Chauncey Borland. Curtis, the club’s commodore from 1909 to 1933, bought the site of an old lime kiln on Bay View Street and hired the Portland architect John Calvin Stevens to design a Shingle Style clubhouse with large porches, finished in 1912. In 1926 he gave the property to the town, on condition that it stay in use as a yacht club, and the clubhouse was added to the National Register of Historic Places on January 11, 1980. It stands south of downtown, where the Megunticook River empties into the outer harbor.

Curtis Island Light marks the approach to the harbor. The light station was established in 1835, and the present brick tower, 7.5 meters (25 feet) tall with its lamp 16 meters (52 feet) above the water, dates from 1896. It was automated in 1972, and the island it stands on shelters the harbor from ocean storms.

October brings highs of 14 C (57 F) and lows of 4.9 C (41 F), and the trees behind the clubhouse turn red and gold. Precipitation is spread through the year and totals 1,427 millimeters (56.2 inches). After dark the camera switches to a black and white night view, lit by the clubhouse windows and a few lamps along the pier, and rain often leaves drops on the lens.

Things to Do Near Camden

Camden Hills State Park rises behind the town. Edna St. Vincent Millay wrote her poem “Renascence” from the top of Mount Battie and first recited it to guests at the Whitehall Inn in 1912. Mount Megunticook, in the same hills, reaches 422 meters (1,385 feet).

In town, Harbor Park was laid out by the Olmsted Brothers and the Camden Amphitheatre was designed by the landscape architect Fletcher Steele. The windjammer fleet that Captain Swift started still takes passengers out under sail from Camden. Inland, the Camden Snow Bowl on Ragged Mountain hosts the U.S. National Toboggan Championships each February.
