About Beverly Harbor and the Jubilee Yacht Club

The Jubilee Yacht Club was incorporated in 1896 and is a private club with more than 400 active members. Three one-design fleets race from the club: Snipe Fleet 554, J/24 Fleet 28 and J/105 Fleet 2. The clubhouse sits at the edge of the Fish Flake Hill Historic District, the oldest part of Beverly, which was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1971. The name comes from the wooden tables, called flakes, that were used to dry salted fish on this hillside until the end of the 19th century, and the streets above the water were home to sea captains including the Revolutionary War privateer Hugh Hill. Beverly itself was settled in 1626, became a town in 1668 and a city in 1894, and had 42,670 residents at the 2020 census.

This stretch of water has a strong claim on American naval history. The armed schooner Hannah, the first ship commissioned for the Continental forces, was fitted out at Glover’s Wharf and first sailed from Beverly Harbor on September 5, 1775, which is why Beverly calls itself the birthplace of the American Navy. Upriver from the club, the Veterans Memorial Bridge carries Route 1A over the Danvers River to Salem. A little further into town, the Balch House dates to at least 1679 and is one of the oldest timber-framed houses still standing in America, while Hale Farm was built in 1695 and expanded by the same family over generations. The Cabot Street Cinema Theatre, opened in 1920, still has its frescoes, golden dome and full balcony.

For time outdoors, Lynch Park is the city’s main green space, on the grounds where President Taft once rented a summer home, and Dane Street Beach is the closest place to swim. Long Hill, a 1921 estate, has 5 acres (2 hectares) of cultivated gardens and 100 acres (40 hectares) of woodland open daily. North Shore Music Theatre stages shows in a 1,500-seat theatre in the round, and the Cummings Center, the former United Shoe Machinery works built between 1903 and 1906, is one of the region’s best known industrial landmarks. Crossing the Veterans Memorial Bridge on foot or by car puts you in Salem within minutes.
