About this webcam
The Elk Rapids Harbor Webcam looks out from the fuel dock of the Edward C. Grace Memorial Harbor in Elk Rapids, Michigan, straight down the entrance channel to East Grand Traverse Bay. Two arms of piled rock frame the view: a short breakwater on the left with a red navigation light at its tip, and a long rock wall on the right backed by grass and a few small trees. Mooring piles, wooden walkways and the fuel pumps fill the foreground, and past the harbor mouth the open bay runs out to a low ridge on the far left horizon. On a summer afternoon the channel can carry a steady line of runabouts, sailboats and fishing charters. Late in the year the same water can turn slate gray, with whitecaps rolling in past the light.
About Elk Rapids Harbor
Elk Rapids is a village of 1,529 people (2020 census) on a narrow isthmus between Elk Lake to the east and the East Arm of Grand Traverse Bay to the west, about 21 kilometers (13 miles) northeast of Traverse City. It stands at 182 meters (597 feet) above sea level, and the Elk River divides the village on its way from the inland lakes to the bay. The town was platted in 1852, and local history holds that a pair of shed elk antlers found near the river mouth gave it its name in 1858. The low ridge across the water on the left of the frame is the Old Mission Peninsula.
The marina in the frame is run by the village. Its lower harbor holds 213 slips with direct access to the bay, about 50 of them kept for transient boaters from May to October, plus a four-lane concrete launch ramp. Two smaller upper basins on the Elk River add 50 seasonal slips with a route into the Antrim County Chain of Lakes. The fuel dock in the foreground sells ethanol-free premium gasoline and diesel and has a pump-out station, and the marina has been a Michigan Certified Clean Marina since 2006. It is also a state Harbor of Refuge, so staff will take in a boat in an emergency even when every slip is full.
Industry built this waterfront long before the pleasure boats came. In 1873 the Elk Rapids Iron Company raised a blast furnace near the site of today’s Riverwalk Grill, fed by 18 charcoal kilns upriver, while its locomotive hauled Upper Peninsula iron ore in from a 549 meter (1,800 foot) pier on the bay. Pig iron smelting made the Dexter and Noble business the largest employer in town. In 1865 Edwin S. Noble built the Island House on a four acre (1.6 hectare) sand dune, spreading clay and loam over it and planting more than sixty species of trees. It has served as the village library since 1949.
Weather and Climate in Elk Rapids
The nearest long-term record comes from Cherry Capital Airport in Traverse City, and its 1991 to 2020 normals match what the Elk Rapids Harbor Webcam shows through the year. January highs average -1.5 C (29 F) with lows near -8 C (17 F), and the station logs about 258 centimeters (101 inches) of snow in an average winter. With the transient season closed, winter frames usually show empty docks, snow on the breakwaters and a gray bay. Spring warms slowly: April highs reach about 12 C (54 F), while nights still sit close to freezing.
Summer is the busy season in the channel. July highs average 27 C (81 F) with lows around 15 C (59 F), and this is when the transient docks fill and boats come and go all day. October brings highs near 15 C (59 F) and lows around 5 C (41 F), and the grass and trees on the right-hand breakwater turn brown and gold. The airport records about 740 millimeters (29 inches) of precipitation a year.

The marina sits between two sandy beaches, and downtown Elk Rapids is an easy walk from the docks, with a courtesy shuttle to anywhere in the village for boaters. Cross the wooden Island House Walk Bridge from River Street to reach the library on the Isle of Pines, or head to Veterans Memorial Park for the public beach and its kids’ swimming hole. Antrim County’s Elk Rapids Day Park has hiking trails and the Walk of Art, an outdoor sculpture park created by the nonprofit Art Rapids.
Inland, the Elk River Chain of Lakes links 14 lakes and their connecting rivers along a watershed about 121 kilometers (75 miles) long, with Elk Lake on the edge of town and Bass Lake and Birch Lake close by. Farther along it, the Grass River Natural Area protects the river that joins Torch Lake and Clam Lake to Lake Bellaire, with walking trails and the Grass River Center for Education.
