About this webcam

The Golyayla Village Webcam looks across the lower part of Golyayla, a highland village in the Ikizdere district of Rize, in the mountains behind Turkey’s eastern Black Sea coast. From beside a wooden shed with a rusted tin roof, the camera faces up a steep valley. Hay meadows and yellowing trees fall away below the lens, a dirt road loops across the slope, and the village houses climb the right-hand hillside toward bare grassy ridges. Dark conifer forest covers the whole opposite side of the valley, with a stream running over rocks on the valley floor. Cloud often drifts across the higher tops, and in winter the same slopes lie under snow. Six more village cameras share this page, so you can switch from the lower village to the entrance, the valley floor and the road bends at Gavuzogullari.

About Golyayla Village

Golyayla lies 24 kilometers (15 miles) from Ikizdere town and 76 kilometers (47 miles) from the city of Rize. The village center sits at roughly 1,730 meters (5,680 feet) on terrain data, more than 1,100 meters (3,600 feet) above Ikizdere, which stands at 570 meters (1,870 feet). The village was founded in the 1800s under the Greek name Kabaxor and became Golyayla in 1913, but the old name never quite went away: every stream title from the village still calls it Kabahor. The population is small and moves around from year to year, with 258 registered residents in 1985, 132 in 2000, 260 in 2018 and 151 in 2020.

The houses are scattered along the valley rather than packed around one square. The central mosque stands near the middle of the village, and the hamlet of Gavuzogullari, which has a mosque of its own, lies about 1.7 kilometers (1.1 miles) to the northwest.

The main view is camera 10 of the golyayla.net project, which runs 47 active cameras across the village, its hamlets and the high summer pastures. Radio links tie the hamlets together across more than 8 square kilometers (3 square miles), and Raspberry Pi boards push the pictures to YouTube, about 30 terabytes of traffic a month. Cameras 1 to 10 all watch the village, so the Golyayla Village Webcam brings them together: a moving panorama camera, two views of the village entrance, a look up the valley from below, and two cameras on the road bends at Gavuzogullari. Two lines of text at the lower left give the date and the time in Turkey, three hours ahead of UTC, plus a weather readout.

Weather and Climate in Golyayla

Ten years of modeled weather data for the village, 2016 to 2025, put the average January high at just 0.4 C (33 F) and the average low at -7.3 C (19 F). December and February are only slightly milder, and March highs still average 4 C (40 F), so the meadows in front of the camera can stay white from late autumn well into spring. April is the turning point, with highs of 9 C (49 F) and nights hovering just below freezing, and by May highs reach 13.5 C (56 F).

Summers are mild rather than warm. July highs average 18 C (65 F) and August, the warmest month, 19.5 C (67 F), with nights of 11 to 12 C (52 to 54 F). The same record gives the village about 1,770 millimeters (70 inches) of rain and snow a year, with June and July the wettest months at around 200 millimeters (8 inches) each, which is why mist so often fills the valley and hides the upper ridges. September highs are still close to 17 C (62 F). October falls to 13 C (55 F) by day and 4 C (38 F) at night, the month the trees below the camera turn yellow and orange, and by November the nights are below freezing again.

Things to Do Near Golyayla

The village’s own event is the Kabahor Snow Festival. At its second edition, organized by the village headman’s office and the Golyayla Village Association, 56 competitors in three categories raced a 4 kilometer (2.5 mile) course at about 2,300 meters (7,546 feet) on the lazboard, a traditional wooden board, while villagers slid on plastic bags and danced the horon around a fire in the village square. Higher up, Gol Yaylasi, the summer pasture settlement, lies about 4.7 kilometers (2.9 miles) to the southeast at around 2,370 meters (7,776 feet). Beyond it the map shows Mese Tepesi, 3,017 meters (9,898 feet), about 4.8 kilometers (3 miles) east of the village, and Palavit Dagi, 3,154 meters (10,348 feet), about 7.3 kilometers (4.5 miles) away.

To the west, the hamlet of Petran lies about 2.8 kilometers (1.7 miles) from the village center, and the project has a camera there looking back toward Kabahor. Elsewhere in the district, the Cimil valley is known for the Cimil Waterfall, and Anzer, Ikizdere’s best known plateau, sits at 2,200 meters (7,218 feet) and produces a honey that carries a Turkish geographical indication. The main road from Rize follows the valley past Ikizdere town and its tea gardens up to the Ovit Pass, where the Ovit Tunnel opened on February 13, 2018 as the second longest road tunnel in Turkey.
