About this webcam

The North Myrtle Beach Webcam looks out from the Condo-World offices on 17th Avenue South, across South Ocean Boulevard to the Atlantic at Crescent Beach in South Carolina. In the wide shot, the green front of Molly Darcy’s Irish pub fills the right of the frame, a tall tower edges in from the left, and palms line the sand beyond the traffic lights. The camera moves while it runs, shifting from that street corner to closer framings of the breakers and the beach access. Sea color, parked cars and the tide line can all change through the day, and a hazy afternoon can blur the horizon into the sky.

About North Myrtle Beach

North Myrtle Beach is a city of 18,790 people at the 2020 census, spread across 56.30 square kilometers (21.74 square miles) near the top of the Grand Strand, the arc of sand that runs more than 97 kilometers (60 miles) from Little River to Winyah Bay. It sits about 24 kilometers (15 miles) northeast of Myrtle Beach, at an elevation of 7.9 meters (26 feet). The camera’s address, 311 17th Avenue South, is in Crescent Beach, one of the four neighborhoods that make up the city.

Those neighborhoods were once separate beach towns. Cherry Grove Beach, Ocean Drive Beach, Crescent Beach and Windy Hill Beach came together as North Myrtle Beach in May 1968, under an act the South Carolina General Assembly passed the year before. Atlantic Beach, a historically Black resort town incorporated in 1966, chose to stay independent, and it still sits between Crescent Beach and Windy Hill.

Crescent Beach lies between Ocean Drive and Windy Hill, and the corner in frame shows how it is built: a low-rise pub at 1701 South Ocean Boulevard, towers on either side, and a wooden walkway leading over to the sand. Hurricane Hazel came ashore near the state line on October 15, 1954, and in North Myrtle Beach the storm carried a three-story hotel and a 240-meter (800-foot) pier out to sea.

Weather and Climate in North Myrtle Beach

Summer is the hot season on this stretch of coast. Over the past decade, July highs averaged 30°C (86°F) with nights near 24°C (76°F), and the local tourism office puts the ocean at around 27°C (80°F) in summer. The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30, so a passing storm can turn the breakers in this frame white and rough well into fall. Haze can also soften the line between sea and sky when no storm is near.

Fall stays warm for longer than the calendar suggests. October highs average 24°C (75°F) with lows near 16°C (61°F), and the tourism office has the sea still close to 24°C (75°F). Winter is mild by northern standards, with January averaging highs of 13°C (55°F) and lows of 5°C (40°F). Spring warms quickly, reaching 22°C (71°F) by day and 14°C (56°F) by night in April, while the sea climbs to about 21°C (70°F) by May.

Things to Do Near North Myrtle Beach

Start with what is in the picture. Molly Darcy’s serves food steps from the sand, Bay Watch Cafe is close by, and New Wave Watersports launches parasailing and banana boat rides straight from Crescent Beach. A short drive northeast, Ocean Drive is the home of the Carolina shag, which became South Carolina’s official state dance in 1984. The OD Pavilion, Fat Harold’s Beach Club and the Ocean Drive Shag Club are all in that neighborhood, along with the shops on Main Street.

Farther north, Cherry Grove Pier reaches 300 meters (985 feet) into the Atlantic and is the base for pier fishing there, with Cherry Grove Oceanfront Park nearby. Inland, Barefoot Landing sits beside the Intracoastal Waterway with more than 100 stores and restaurants around a small lake, plus the Alabama Theatre, House of Blues and Alligator Adventure next door. Golfers can cross the waterway to the four courses at Barefoot Resort.
