About this webcam

The Myrtle Beach Boardwalk Webcam looks north along the oldest and busiest stretch of the oceanfront in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. The SkyWheel turns on the left of the frame, the boardwalk runs away between palm trees and a long row of flagpoles, and the Atlantic breaks on the sand to the right. Sand volleyball courts fill the foreground, and Pier 14 reaches into the ocean in the middle distance, with the hotel towers of the northern beachfront fading toward the horizon behind it. Foot traffic on the boardwalk builds through the afternoon, and as dusk falls the spokes of the wheel light up in color. A small weather panel in the top right corner of the stream shows the current temperature and wind.

About the Myrtle Beach Boardwalk

The camera belongs to Myrtle Beach Today, whose YouTube channel runs several live cams along this coast. The channel calls this one its Pavilion Park webcam, broadcasting from downtown Myrtle Beach. The name points to the site of the old Myrtle Beach Pavilion, an amusement park that was once listed on the National Register of Historic Places and has since been demolished. From there the view runs up the northern half of the boardwalk.

The boardwalk opened in May 2010 at a cost of nearly $6.4 million and runs 1.9 kilometers (1.2 miles) between two piers: Pier 14 at 14th Avenue North, the one in frame, and the 2nd Avenue Pier to the south, behind the camera. It has three sections. The northern one runs from Pier 14 to Plyler Park, the middle one from Plyler Park to the former Pavilion site, and the southern Promenade carries on to 2nd Avenue. National Geographic has ranked it third in the United States, and Travel and Leisure placed it second.

The SkyWheel stands 57 meters (187 feet) high beside Plyler Park, and when it was built it was the tallest Ferris wheel in the United States east of the Mississippi River. Just off this stretch, the Gay Dolphin Gift Cove at 916 North Ocean Boulevard is a gift shop that dates back to the 1940s. Myrtle Beach had 35,682 residents at the 2020 census, and its beach is part of the Grand Strand, a 97 kilometer (60 mile) run of sand along the South Carolina coast.

Weather and Climate in Myrtle Beach

Summers are hot and humid. July averages highs of 31 C (87 F) and lows of 22 C (72 F), and this is when the beach on the right of the frame is usually at its fullest and the volleyball courts see the most games. Fall stays warm for a long time: October highs still reach about 24 C (76 F), with nights near 12 C (54 F), and the crowds typically thin out once the summer season ends. Winter is mild, with January highs of 13 C (55 F) and lows near 1 C (34 F), so the boardwalk often has more walkers than sunbathers from December to February.

Spring warms quickly, with April highs of 22 C (72 F) and lows of 10 C (51 F). The city gets about 1,361 millimeters (53.6 inches) of precipitation a year. Late summer and fall are hurricane season on this coast. Hurricane Hazel in 1954 is remembered as the worst in the city’s history, and Hurricane Hugo followed in 1989. On rough days the camera can show the surf running high toward the dune line below the flags, while clear winter mornings bring the sharpest view up the beach to the distant towers.

Things to Do Near the Myrtle Beach Boardwalk

The boardwalk itself is the easiest place to start. Plyler Park, at the foot of the SkyWheel, has a bronze Goddess of the Sea sculpture and hosts Hot Summer Nights, with live music twice a week in summer along with a kids carnival, bagpipers and a Dixieland band. Fun Plaza Arcade at 902 North Ocean Boulevard keeps Skee-ball, air hockey and claw machines, and the 8th Avenue Tiki Bar and Grill, RipTydz Oceanfront Grille and Rooftop Bar and Mad Myrtle’s Ice Creamery all sit along the route. A ride on the SkyWheel puts you high above the scene the camera watches.

Away from the oceanfront, Broadway at the Beach covers 1.4 square kilometers (350 acres) along the US 17 Bypass around the 9.3 hectare (23 acre) Lake Broadway, and is the largest festival entertainment complex in South Carolina. Family Kingdom Amusement Park has been running since 1966. For a quieter beach, Myrtle Beach State Park, established in 1935, has just under 1.6 kilometers (1 mile) of sand along with camping, hiking, biking and fishing. Barefoot Landing, an outdoor shopping complex built over Louis Lake beside the Intracoastal Waterway, is home to the House of Blues and the Alabama Theatre, and golfers have roughly 100 courses to choose from in the area.
