About this webcam

The Dead Dog Saloon Webcam looks across the stage of the Dead Dog Saloon, a waterfront restaurant and music bar on the MarshWalk in Murrells Inlet, South Carolina. Mounted inside the covered deck, the camera faces the bandstand and its speaker stacks, then runs out through the open front to rows of patio tables, the deck railing and the docks, pilings and boats along the inlet. Live oaks and palms fill the far side of the frame. By day the stage often sits empty while diners come and go on the deck behind it. The bigger change comes when a band takes the stage under the lighting rig and the tables fill. The decorations follow the calendar as well, and in early October two inflatable jack o’ lanterns flank the stage.

About the Dead Dog Saloon

The Dead Dog Saloon stands at 4079 U.S. 17 Business, on the Murrells Inlet MarshWalk, a boardwalk of about 0.8 kilometers (half a mile) that runs along a salt marsh lined with restaurants and bars. The restaurant opened on the MarshWalk in 2002. Beach TV, the Grand Strand broadcaster whose Destination Network supplies this camera, describes a large indoor and outdoor deck with 3 waterfront bars and seating for nearly 500. From most seats the view carries across the inlet all the way to Garden City.

The building in the frame is the second on the site. Early on February 22, 2012, hours after about 300 people had celebrated Marshi Gras there, a fire gutted the saloon. Fire officials ruled it accidental and believed it started on the back deck, where there were open fire pits. The restaurant reopened 83 days later. The rebuild raised the outdoor deck ceiling by 1.8 to 2.4 meters (6 to 8 feet), gave the interior 5.2 meter (17 foot) ceilings, added a large bar facing the inlet and put in the bigger stage and upgraded sound system that now fill the camera’s foreground, along with 40 more seats.

Murrells Inlet is a Georgetown County community of 9,740 people at the 2020 census, and it calls itself the Seafood Capital of South Carolina. The inlet reaches the Atlantic through its salt marsh, and from the saloon’s deck you can watch fishing boats come back in from a day at sea. Myrtle Beach is about 21 kilometers (13 miles) to the north.

Weather and Climate in Murrells Inlet

Average monthly temperatures in Murrells Inlet run from 8.1 C (46.5 F) in January to 26.9 C (80.5 F) in July. Summer is hot and humid, with the Bermuda High pushing tropical air onto the coast. Nearby Myrtle Beach averages July highs of 30.8 C (87.4 F) and lows of 22.0 C (71.6 F), so summer nights on the deck stay warm. The stage has an open front facing the inlet, which lets the weather straight into the frame: glare, haze and passing showers over the docks all show up on the camera.

Spring and fall are milder. April averages highs of 21.9 C (71.5 F) and October 24.2 C (75.6 F), with nights around 10 to 12 C (50 to 54 F). Winter is cool rather than cold, with January highs of 13.1 C (55.5 F) and lows of 0.9 C (33.6 F). The area gets about 1,361 millimeters (53.6 inches) of rain a year. Tropical storms reach this coast from time to time. Hurricane Hugo in 1989 was the last to do significant damage in Myrtle Beach, and the hurricane of 1893 devastated Murrells Inlet and ended the rice plantation economy around it.

Things to Do Near Murrells Inlet

Start on the MarshWalk itself. The boardwalk links the Dead Dog Saloon with its waterfront neighbors, the Wicked Tuna among them, and a stroll over the marsh is a good way to see the inlet between meals. The saloon’s own kitchen leans on fresh seafood, with dishes such as Grouper Francaise, Shrimp and Grits and Pan-Seared Scallops, and there is a hammock on the deck for anyone who stays for the music. The restaurant posts its entertainment schedule on its website. The annual Marshi Gras celebration around Mardi Gras is a big night on the walk, and it brought about 300 people to the saloon in 2012.

Huntington Beach State Park lies about 5.6 kilometers (3.5 miles) south in a straight line, and Atalaya, a castle, stands inside the park. Brookgreen Gardens sits about 6.8 kilometers (4.2 miles) to the southwest. Garden City is across the inlet, the same shoreline the saloon’s tables look toward, and the city of Georgetown is about 34 kilometers (21 miles) south along U.S. Route 17.
