About this webcam
The Swan Island Dahlias Webcam looks over the display grounds of Swan Island Dahlias, a flower farm on the northwest side of Canby, Oregon, about 26 kilometers (16 miles) south of downtown Portland. Long rows of dahlias in red, orange, pink, yellow and white run away from the camera across the right half of the frame. The farm’s parking lot fills the left side, and a small shed painted with a dahlia mural stands on the lawn in front. KOIN 6, the Portland TV station, runs the stream as one of its weather cameras. August and September bring the fullest color, and the rows were still in flower in early October 2026, with sprinklers spraying across them in the late morning.
About Swan Island Dahlias
Swan Island Dahlias describes itself as the largest dahlia grower in the United States. The business started in 1927 as Rex Dahlia Gardens in Portland, founded by Frances McCarter and her husband, with fields in the Sellwood district and offices and warehouses near Swan Island. It moved to Canby in the 1940s and took the Swan Island Dahlias name in 1948. The Gitts family bought it in 1963, and the farm has since grown to nearly 20 hectares (50 acres). The farm is marking 2026 as its Centennial Season.
More than 375 varieties grow here on over 500,000 plants, and the whole acreage is dug up and replanted every year. The tubers go in the ground in spring, the fields are usually in full bloom by the first week of August, and the harvest comes over the winter, with tubers shipped to gardeners from March to May. That cycle decides what the Swan Island Dahlias Webcam shows: dense color from August into autumn, and much plainer ground for the rest of the year.
Away from the flower rows, the camera takes in an old white pickup parked by a small roofed booth, a delivery truck in the lot, and a fenced bed of mixed dahlias along the bottom of the picture. A white house and a red barn sit on the far side of the fields, backed by tall conifers and low wooded hills. Canby itself lies about 45 meters (148 feet) above sea level in the Willamette Valley, with the Willamette River to the north and the Molalla River along its southern and western edges. The city was incorporated in 1893, counted 18,171 residents at the 2020 census, and goes by the nickname Oregon’s Garden Spot.
Weather and Climate in Canby
Canby has a warm-summer Mediterranean climate, with mild, wet winters and warm, dry summers. Across the ten years from 2016 to 2025, January afternoons averaged about 48 F (9 C), with nights near 35 F (2 C). Spring warms slowly, to highs around 60 F (15 C) in April and 67 F (20 C) in May, the season when the tubers are planted. Most of the year’s rain falls between October and March, so through the winter the camera often looks out on gray skies and wet fields.
July and August are close to dry, with average highs of about 85 F (29 C) and lows near 58 F (14 C). That is the height of the bloom, and the sprinklers that show up in the frame help carry the rows through it. September cools to highs around 76 F (24 C), and October drops to about 63 F (17 C) as the autumn rain returns.
Things to Do Near Swan Island Dahlias
During the bloom, the fields and display garden open to visitors from early August to the end of September, Wednesday to Sunday plus Labor Day, from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., with free admission and parking. The farm’s Annual Dahlia Festival runs in that window. Outside the season the Mercantile shop stays open on weekdays and Saturdays, and tubers are sold cash and carry in April and May.
A few miles north of town, Molalla River State Park sits where the Pudding and Molalla rivers meet the Willamette. Its great blue heron rookery is one of the largest in the Willamette Valley, with dozens of nests in the cottonwoods during the spring breeding season, and an easy 3.1-kilometer (1.9-mile) trail crosses meadow and woods to the Molalla shore. The park is about 800 meters (half a mile) from the Canby Ferry, which runs year-round across the Willamette to Wilsonville, weather permitting. Closer in, the mostly paved Canby Logging Road Trail ends near the Willamette with views of Mount Hood on clear days, the town has its own Canby Depot Museum, and the Clackamas County Fair, held every year since 1907, takes over the fairgrounds in August, when the dahlias are at their peak.
