About this webcam
The Conrad Montana Webcam looks southwest down Main Street in downtown Conrad from the Neal Law PC office at 417 South Main Street. Across the road sit the Stockman Bank sign, a low brick block and a long storefront under a bright blue roof, with angled parking along both curbs and a double yellow line running diagonally through the middle of the frame. Pickup trucks pull in and back out through the day, and on the left edge the street runs on toward the far end of downtown. Open sky fills the top third of the picture, so the prairie weather is easy to read here, from a cloudless morning to a wind-driven snow squall. A second camera on the same building faces the other way, northeast along the street.
About Conrad
Conrad is the county seat of Pondera County, which was created in 1919, and it had 2,318 residents at the 2020 census. The town stands at 1,071 meters (3,514 feet) on open prairie east of the Rocky Mountains, and Interstate 15 passes through, with Exits 335 and 339 serving the town. The city calls itself the Heart of the Golden Triangle. Shelby is about a 30 minute drive away, and Great Falls International Airport about an hour.
Conrad marks the halfway point of the Whoop-Up Trail, the old route between Fort Benton, Montana, and Lethbridge, Alberta, and the town’s early June festival still takes its name from it. Downtown keeps several older buildings: the Orpheum Theater was first built in 1917, and Conrad City Hall, now the public library, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Livestream Montana runs this camera as part of a network of community cams in towns such as Choteau, Shelby, Valier, Augusta and Great Falls. The Conrad camera is mounted on the Neal Law PC building, the operator lists its orientation as southwest, and Stockman Bank, the sign you can read across the street, is at 420 South Main. Because the lens faces southwest, the storefronts opposite catch the morning sun, while on a winter afternoon the low sun can sit close to the top of the frame. The second camera, on the same office, looks northeast past the blue roof toward a row of two-story brick and stucco storefronts, double globe street lamps and a red awning right beside the lens.
Weather and Climate in Conrad
Conrad has a semi-arid climate, with about 321 millimeters (12.6 inches) of precipitation in an average year. January is the coldest month, averaging highs of 1 C (34 F) and lows of minus 12 C (11 F), and the camera can show snow banked along the curbs and frost on the parked trucks. The local weather station has recorded extremes from minus 43 C (minus 46 F) to 41 C (105 F) since 1911.
Spring thaws slowly, and April nights still average just below freezing at about minus 1 C (30 F). July is the warm peak, with average highs of 28 C (82 F) and nights that cool to around 11 C (52 F), and the tall spruces behind the bank stand out against a summer sky. October brings highs near 14 C (57 F) and lows around minus 1 C (31 F), and by the middle of the month the broadleaf trees behind the blue roof have already lost their leaves.
Things to Do Near Conrad
The restored Orpheum Theater keeps its art deco details, Olson’s Drug is a pharmacy and gift shop with its original soda fountain, and Folklore Coffee is a micro-roastery serving pastries and light bites. The Conrad Transportation and Historical Museum, open seasonally, has a period drug store, a general store, a recreated homestead shack and antique automobiles. Pondera Golf Club is under five minutes’ drive from Main Street. In early June, Whoop-Up Trail Days fills the town with a two-day rodeo, a pancake breakfast, the Rhubarb Festival, parades and a fun run.
Lake Frances, elsewhere in Pondera County, is a mountain-fed lake with views of the Rockies, 50 campsites and two boat ramps, and anglers fish it for perch, pike and walleye. Once it freezes, the lake turns to ice fishing, skating, tubing and snowmobiling. Farther west, the Rocky Mountain Front is about an hour from Conrad and Glacier National Park lies within two hours. Beyond the Front, the Bob Marshall Wilderness Complex covers more than 4,000 square kilometers (1 million acres), the third-largest wilderness area in the Lower 48, and it takes in the long cliff line of the Chinese Wall.
