About this webcam
The El Quisco Webcam looks out over the main beach of El Quisco, a seaside town on the central coast of Chile, west of Santiago. Palms line the promenade in the foreground, next to a small plaza with the town’s name spelled out in colored letters, and beyond them a wide stretch of pale sand runs down to the Pacific surf. Dark rocks break the water offshore, and a headland covered in houses closes the far end of the bay. The swell rolls in over those rocks all day, and the light shifts from hard summer sun to the gray of a winter front. A second camera, on the fishing cove tab, looks across the same bay to the fishermen’s cove and its pier.
About El Quisco
El Quisco is a town and commune in San Antonio Province, in Chile’s Valparaiso Region. It covers 50.7 square kilometers (19.6 square miles) between Algarrobo to the north and El Tabo to the south, with the town center just 13 meters (43 feet) above sea level. The 2024 census counted 18,971 residents, up from 15,955 in 2017. The commune was only created on August 30, 1956, and it takes in four quite different sectors: El Quisco itself, Punta de Tralca, Isla Negra and El Totoral.
The history goes back much further. The area was once called Huallilemu and later El Totoral, the first signs of Spanish settlement date to 1570, and Francis Drake probably anchored the Golden Hind in this bay in December 1578. Today this stretch of shore is known as the Litoral de los Poetas, the Poets’ Coast.
Its most famous resident was Pablo Neruda. The poet lived at his house in Isla Negra, elsewhere in the commune, from 1939 until his death in 1973, with long gaps for travel and exile. He named the place after the dark outcrop of rocks just offshore, since Isla Negra was never an island. Isla Negra lies about 45 kilometers (28 miles) south of Valparaiso and 96 kilometers (60 miles) west of Santiago in a straight line.
Weather and Climate in El Quisco
El Quisco has a mild climate with dry summers. Averaged over 2015 to 2024 in the ERA5 reanalysis, January runs from about 14°C (56°F) at night to 20°C (68°F) in the afternoon, and summer barely changes from December to March. Winter is cool and damp rather than cold: July averages 7°C to 14°C (44°F to 56°F). In autumn, April sits at 11°C to 18°C (52°F to 64°F), and in spring, October averages 9°C to 16°C (49°F to 61°F).
Almost all of the rain falls between May and August, with June the wettest month, while December to March typically sees under 5 millimeters (0.2 inches) a month. The total over those ten years averaged about 315 millimeters (12.4 inches) a year. On the El Quisco Webcam, the dry months mean long spells of sun on the sand, while winter fronts can roll gray cloud over the headland and push heavier surf onto the offshore rocks.
Things to Do Near El Quisco
The main draw is the Casa de Isla Negra, Neruda’s house, now a museum run by the Pablo Neruda Foundation. Inside are the ship figureheads and colored glasses he collected, and Neruda and his wife Matilde Urrutia are buried on the property, on the bluff above the ocean, where their remains were moved in 1992. Many visitors combine it with his other two houses, La Sebastiana in Valparaiso and La Chascona in Santiago. From the house you can walk down to the shore and the dark rocks that gave Isla Negra its name.
Back in El Quisco, the main beach is the place for a walk along the promenade or a swim, and scuba diving is among the water sports on offer. The fishermen’s cove at the end of the bay, the view on the second camera, has its own pier. Playa Las Conchitas and the beach at Punta de Tralca are other stretches of sand within the commune, and the neighboring communes of Algarrobo and El Tabo continue the coast north and south.
