The Potawatomi knew the area as Wah-ya-qua-kah-me-kong, a name that translates as “head of the land” or “land’s end.” The settlement was once called Hedgehog Harbor and now carries the name of Elias Gill, a local landowner in the 19th century. Commercial fishing has a long history here, and it continues today.

The water off the village leads to Death’s Door, or Porte des Morts, the strait that links Green Bay with Lake Michigan. Pilot Island and its lighthouse, the Pilot Island Light, lie nearby. Drivers who want their car on the island go 3.5 kilometers (2.25 miles) east to Northport Pier for the Washington Island Ferry Line. In the village, the Door County Maritime Museum runs its Gills Rock site, the Death’s Door Maritime Museum, on a side road off the highway. Its exhibits include the fishing tug Hope, built in 1930 by Sturgeon Bay Boat Works, which made its last fishing trip in 1992 and can be boarded.

Scuba divers come to Gills Rock for the shipwrecks in and around Death’s Door. On land, Door Bluff Headlands County Park, on Door Bluff Park Road near the village, has been kept in its natural state. A short drive south, Newport State Park near Ellison Bay covers 960 hectares (2,373 acres) at the tip of the peninsula and was named an International Dark Sky Park in 2017, which makes it a good place for stargazing on clear nights.
