About this webcam

The Green Bay Train Webcam looks south along the tracks from The Depot Restaurant, the old Chicago and North Western passenger station at 200 Dousman Street in Green Bay, Wisconsin. It sits at Milepost 242.9 on Canadian National’s Fox River Subdivision, and the line running past the depot’s gray roof carries CN freight plus a couple of Fox Valley and Lake Superior (FOXY) locals. Northbound trains come straight at the lens on their way into CN’s Green Bay Yard, while southbound trains pull away toward the Fox Valley. Around the track, the frame takes in a grade crossing with flashing signals, the brick Neville Public Museum across the street, the Fox River on the left with downtown on the far bank, and the Donald Driver statue on the right.

About the Green Bay Depot and Its Railcam

Charles Sumner Frost designed the depot in the Italian Renaissance Revival style, and it opened in 1899. Passenger trains such as the Flambeau 400, which ran between Chicago and Ashland, called here until passenger service ended in 1971, and the building joined the National Register of Historic Places on December 30, 1999. The Green Bay Packers left from this station for their first ever road trip, to Ishpeming, Michigan. Titletown Brewing bought the building in 1996 and moved out in 2021. Today it houses The Depot Restaurant, a scratch kitchen known for burgers, fish and chips and pasta, and the camera exists thanks to the restaurant.

The figure on the right of the picture is Receiver, a 6.7-meter (22-foot) concrete statue of a football player. It was installed in June 1985 at the entrance of the Green Bay Packers Hall of Fame, moved to the Neville Public Museum in 2003, then crossed the street to the depot in 2005. In 2013 it was repainted as Donald Driver, who played 14 seasons at wide receiver for the Packers, wearing his number 80, and the adjacent Pearl Street was renamed Donald Driver Way. The depot and the statue are both stops on the Packers Heritage Trail.

The Tavern League of Railfans, which runs live railcams in several towns, operates the stream. Its notes say the camera faces south, and that southbound trains are heading for Wrightstown, Appleton and Neenah, for the Howard Spur, or, in FOXY’s case, for Denmark, Wisconsin. Green Bay itself is a city of 107,395 people (2020 census) at the mouth of the Fox River on Lake Michigan, at an elevation of 177 meters (581 feet).

Weather and Climate in Green Bay

Green Bay has a humid continental climate, and winter changes this view more than any other season. January averages a high of 25.5 F (-3.6 C) and a low of 11.1 F (-11.6 C), and the city collects about 141 centimeters (55.6 inches) of snow in a typical year. Snow can cover the lawns beside the track and the depot roof in the foreground. The record low is -36 F (-38 C), set on January 21, 1888. With short winter days, some trains pass in the dark, when a headlight and the flashing crossing signals are most of what shows.

Summer is warm and green. July averages a high of 81.0 F (27.2 C) and a low of 60.1 F (15.6 C), and the record high is 104 F (40 C), from July 13, 1936. Annual precipitation is about 803 millimeters (31.61 inches). Spring and fall sit between those extremes, and by early October the trees on the right side of the frame start turning yellow while the lawns along the track stay green.

Things to Do Near the Green Bay Depot

Start across the street. The Neville Public Museum of Brown County is the brick building in the middle of the frame, and The Depot serves lunch and dinner right beside the line. The depot stands in the Broadway District of downtown Green Bay, and the Packers Heritage Trail links it with other team landmarks around the city, including Lambeau Field, the Packers’ stadium since 1957.

Anyone who watches this railcam for the trains should save time for the National Railroad Museum in the suburb of Ashwaubenon. Founded in 1956, it holds more than 70 locomotives and cars, among them Union Pacific Big Boy No. 4017, built by Alco in 1944 and one of the largest steam locomotives ever made, the British A4 locomotive Dwight D. Eisenhower (No. 60008) with two cars converted for Eisenhower’s use in World War II, and a 1950s General Motors Aerotrain. For time outdoors, Heritage Hill State Historical Park in Allouez, the Bay Beach Wildlife Sanctuary and the Fox River State Recreational Trail are all close to the city.
