It is home to a colony of blue penguins, which are the smallest species of penguin in the world. These penguins come ashore at the colony each evening to nest and breed. Visitors to the colony can watch the penguins coming ashore and observe their behavior up close. Blue penguins do not migrate, but some of New Zealand’s birds make enormous journeys: from September onward, bar-tailed godwits arrive from Alaska after a nonstop flight of more than 11,000 kilometers (6,800 miles), the route traced on our bird migration map.
