About Saint John

Saint John sits where the Saint John River empties into the Bay of Fundy, in the south of New Brunswick. It became Canada’s first incorporated city by royal charter on 18 May 1785, joining the Loyalist settlements of Parr Town and Carleton across the harbour from one another. Samuel de Champlain had reached the same harbour on 24 June 1604, the feast day of St John the Baptist, and named the river after him; the Wolastoqiyik knew it as the Wolastoq. The 2021 census counted 69,895 people inside the city limits and 130,613 across the wider metropolitan area.

The open ground in the middle of the frame is Fundy Quay, a former Canadian Coast Guard station the city bought in January 2011. Five mixed use buildings are planned for it, 69,700 square meters of floor space and 677 homes, with the first six storey block due to finish in late 2026 and the last around 2032. The landscaped square at the foot of the site is Ihtoli-maqahamok, the Gathering Space, which opened in July 2024 under a Wolastoqiyik name meaning exactly that.

Across the water, the blue gantry cranes belong to the Port of Saint John, Canada’s third largest port by tonnage. It runs along 3,900 meters (12,800 feet) of waterfront on both sides of the river and stays ice free all year. Because the Fundy tide meets the river current here, slack water arrives at about half tide rather than at high or low water, which is why vessels heading upriver have to wait for it.

Rain totals about 1,295 millimeters (51.0 inches) a year, with late autumn and early winter the wettest stretch. Autumn brings the clearest air, which is also when the cruise berths are busiest.

Things to Do Near Saint John

Almost everything the main camera shows is walkable. Harbour Passage begins at Market Square, a few steps from the Fundy Quay site, and its red surfaced path runs roughly 3.7 kilometers (2.3 miles) out and back along the water, with a further 500 meters wrapping the outside of the quay. Follow it far enough and it reaches the Reversing Falls bridge, where underwater ledges churn the current into rapids and the incoming tide shoves the river backwards for hours at a time. The Saint John City Market on Charlotte Street holds a charter dating from 1785 and is the oldest continuously operated farmers market in Canada.

The New Brunswick Museum, the oldest continuing museum in the country, traces its collection to Abraham Gesner’s work in 1842, and Area 506 Waterfront Container Village sits beside the cruise berths, built from more than 60 shipping containers. West of the city, Irving Nature Park covers 243 hectares (600 acres) between a salt marsh and the bay, and in 2011 became the first Urban Star Park named by the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada. The city sits inside Stonehammer, the first UNESCO Geopark in North America, over rock approaching a billion years old.
