About this webcam

The Steinbach Webcam looks down on the Southeast Event Centre, the new arena on Elmdale Street in Steinbach, Manitoba, from a raised position across its parking lots. The pale grey hall fills the middle of the frame, with its name on the facade above a long band of glass, a landscaped plaza with crosswalks and young trees in front, and rows of parked cars below. Beyond the roof, the town’s tree canopy runs out to a flat prairie horizon. It is a camera for reading the season at a glance, from bare branches and snow on the lots in winter to a canopy of yellow and orange in October. On game nights the lots can fill up, while early mornings tend to be quiet.

About Steinbach and the Southeast Event Centre

Steinbach sits about 58 kilometers (36 miles) southeast of Winnipeg, at an elevation of 253.6 meters (832 feet), and is served by Provincial Trunk Highways 12 and 52. Plautdietsch-speaking Mennonites from Ukraine founded it in 1874 beside Steinbach Creek, which is now mostly dry. The 2021 census counted 17,806 residents, which makes it the third largest city in Manitoba, and it is still known as The Automobile City.

The Southeast Event Centre opened on March 14, 2025, with a Steinbach Pistons game against the Selkirk Steelers. Ground was broken on January 27, 2023, on the site of the Centennial Arena, a 1967 rink demolished that year. Designed by Verne Reimer Architecture, the building covers about 10,400 square meters (112,000 square feet) and cost $74.3 million. Its main rink seats 2,400 for hockey and can be set up for as many as 4,000 people at concerts and trade shows. The centre also holds a public gym, a walking track and a restaurant, and it links directly to the older T.G. Smith Arena, the Steinbach Curling Club and a movie theatre.

The local news site SteinbachOnline runs the Steinbach Webcam on its YouTube channel. The current broadcast dates from March 6, 2023, about six weeks after the groundbreaking, so it has run through the whole construction of the arena it now shows. In the foreground, the number of parked cars is a quick read on how busy the building is on any given day.

Weather and Climate in Steinbach

Winters are long and cold. Environment Canada normals for 1981 to 2010 put the January average high at -11.1 C (12 F) and the average low at -22 C (-8 F), and the coldest temperature on record is -43.5 C (-46.3 F). About 107 centimeters (42 inches) of snow falls in an average year, so for much of the winter the lawns and landscaped islands in front of the event centre can sit under white, and the trees behind the roof stand bare against a pale sky.

Summers are warm. July averages a high of 25.4 C (78 F) and a low of 12.5 C (55 F), and the record high is 37.5 C (99.5 F). Annual precipitation averages 580.5 millimeters (22.9 inches). Autumn is the most colorful stretch on this camera: in mid October 2026 the canopy behind the arena had turned yellow and orange, with dark evergreens mixed through it, and the flat horizon makes big prairie skies and approaching weather easy to follow across the top of the frame.

Things to Do Near Steinbach

The event centre itself is the obvious first stop. The Steinbach Pistons play their Manitoba Junior Hockey League home games on the main rink, and the Eastman Selects U18 team shares the building. Elmdale Street, the arena’s own address, is also home to the Jake Epp Library, and the Johann G. Barkman Heritage Walkway sets markers on the town’s early history along Elmdale. The Pioneer Cemetery holds the graves of early settlers and a cenotaph to the pioneer families, and A.D. Penner Park is the place for baseball in summer.

Less than 3 kilometers (2 miles) north of the arena, the Mennonite Heritage Village is an open-air museum that opened to the public in 1967. Its reconstructed street village takes in housebarns, churches, schools, the Reimer Store and a sod hut, or semlin, along with a replica of the windmill built in Steinbach in the 1880s. The first replica was burned down by arsonists in 2000 and later rebuilt. The outdoor village opens seasonally while the indoor galleries, including the Gerhard Enns Gallery, stay open year-round, and the museum hosts Pioneer Days in August and Fall on the Farm on Labour Day. Winnipeg is about 58 kilometers (36 miles) to the northwest for a day trip.
