About this webcam
The St. Andrews Airport Webcam looks out from under a hangar overhang at the Harv’s Air flight school, in the middle of the airport complex at St. Andrews, Manitoba, 19 kilometers (12 miles) north-northeast of Winnipeg. The main camera faces south-east across a cracked ramp to the grass, a sign for taxiway B and a runway beyond, with a low line of trees on the horizon. Cessna trainers taxi right past the lens on their way out, larger single-engine turboprops can appear on the taxiway too, and a row of light aircraft often sits parked along the far right of the frame. A second camera covers the west ramp, where high-wing Cessnas and twin-engine aircraft park in front of a line of hangars.
About St. Andrews Airport
The field’s full name is Winnipeg/St. Andrews Airport, and it sits 231 meters (759 feet) above sea level in the Rural Municipality of St. Andrews. NAV CANADA provides air traffic control from a tower on the field, and three asphalt runways cross the airport: 13/31 at 915 meters (3,001 feet), 18/36 at 916 meters (3,004 feet) and 04/22 at 878 meters (2,881 feet), each 23 meters (75 feet) wide. When the tower is closed, pilots switch on the runway lights by radio.
In 2022 St. Andrews was Canada’s 11th busiest airport by aircraft movements. It is used mainly for flight training, air charters, scheduled passenger services and air ambulances, and both Northway Aviation and Amik Aviation run hubs here. The airport is operated by St. Andrews Airport Inc. and sells 100LL avgas and Jet A-1, with storage, tie-downs, plug-ins and minor and major repairs on site.
Harv’s Air’s St. Andrews base is at Unit 100, 601 Club Road, and its practice area lies close by to the north of the school. The company, run by the same owner since 1973, also flies from Steinbach South Airport southeast of Winnipeg, and it keeps rooms for active students right on the airport property, a short walk from the ramp on the St. Andrews Airport Webcam.
Weather and Climate at St. Andrews Airport
The nearest long-term record comes from Winnipeg’s Richardson International Airport, across the city. January there averages a high of -11.4 C (11.5 F) and a low of -21.2 C (-6.2 F), and about 126 centimeters (49.7 inches) of snow falls in a typical year. In winter the grass beside the taxiway can stay white for months, and the airport’s plug-in facilities are the outlets that keep aircraft engines warm enough to start on a frozen morning.
Spring warms quickly, from an April average high of 10 C (50 F) to a July high of 25.8 C (78.4 F) and a July low of 13.2 C (55.8 F). October cools back to about 10.4 C (50.7 F) by day and -0.2 C (31.6 F) at night, and the trees on the horizon turn yellow and orange. Winnipeg records about 2,353 hours of bright sunshine a year and roughly 521 millimeters (20.5 inches) of precipitation, rain and snow together.
Things to Do Near St. Andrews Airport
About 8 kilometers (5 miles) east of the airport, the St. Andrews Lock and Dam at Lockport is the only lock of its kind on the Canadian Prairies, and boats can be watched working through it. Lockport Provincial Heritage Park spreads over 2.2 hectares (5.5 acres) of lawn above the dam, where pelicans and anglers gather, and the community’s retro drive-ins, including Skinner’s, Half Moon Drive In and Sonia’s Stand, serve burgers, hot dogs and milkshakes.
Lower Fort Garry National Historic Site, about 10 kilometers (6 miles) northeast, holds Canada’s oldest collection of fur trade buildings, some dating from the 1830s, and tells the story of the Hudson’s Bay Company trappers and traders who worked there. St. Andrew’s on-the-Red Anglican Church dates from 1845, its stonework credited to the mason Duncan McRae, and the St. Andrew’s Rectory National Historic Site has exhibits on the region’s past. Back at the airport, Harv’s Air sells discovery flights and airplane rides.
