About this webcam

The Corner Brook Webcam looks down on Corner Brook, on the west coast of Newfoundland, from the BayFM transmitter site on Channel 10 Hill. Evergreens and hardwoods fill the bottom of the frame, and below them the city’s rooftops and streets spread across the valley floor and up the far slope. A few large commercial blocks and a single tall building stand out on the left, a road cut climbs the hillside in the middle distance, and forested ridges close off the horizon. The sky takes up the top third of the picture, so the camera is as useful for reading the weather as for watching the town. Snow can whiten every roof in winter, and in October the trees below the lens turn yellow, orange and red.

About Corner Brook

Corner Brook sits on the Bay of Islands at the mouth of the Humber River. Inside the city limits the land rises from sea level to about 304 meters (997 feet). The 2021 census counted 19,316 people in the city and 29,762 in the wider census agglomeration. Captain James Cook surveyed this coast in 1767, and the Captain James Cook Historic Site now stands on Crow Hill overlooking the city. By the middle of the 19th century fewer than 100 people lived here, working in fishing and lumber.

The modern city dates from 1956, when four communities, Curling, Corner Brook West, Corner Brook East and Townsite, were amalgamated. The Corner Brook Pulp and Paper Mill, owned by Kruger Inc., is still a major employer. The Western Memorial Regional Hospital, the largest regional hospital in western Newfoundland, opened to patients on June 2, 2024, and Grenfell Campus of Memorial University is based in the city. The Trans-Canada Highway runs along a high ridge on the south side of town before it descends east into the Humber Valley.

The camera belongs to 100.1 BayFM (CKVB-FM), the community radio station run by Bay of Islands Radio Inc. It launched its 100.1 FM signal on November 5, 2017, as a 50 watt low-power service. In October 2022 the city council approved the sale of a piece of land to the station for a new transmitter site, citing coverage problems at the old one, and in December 2024 the CRTC approved a rise to 2,760 watts, enough to reach about 40,000 people. BayFM went to air permanently from its newly built site on January 31, 2025, and its Sky Cam looks out from the transmitter site on Channel 10 Hill.

Weather and Climate in Corner Brook

Winters are cold and snowy and summers are mild. At the city’s Environment Canada station, 151.8 meters (498 feet) above sea level, the 1991 to 2020 normals give a January average high of -2.6 C (27 F) and a low of -9.9 C (14 F). July averages 22.8 C (73 F) by day and 12.4 C (54 F) at night. Snow shapes the winter view: the station records an average of 407.6 centimeters (160 inches) of snowfall a year, out of 1,292.9 millimeters (50.9 inches) of total precipitation, so through the winter months the roofs, streets and hillsides in the frame are often white.

Autumn brings the most color. By mid October the hardwoods on the slope below the lens turn yellow, orange and red among the dark conifers. Low cloud can cap the ridges behind the city and soften the far side of the valley while the foreground stays sharp. At about 49 degrees north, Corner Brook gets a little over 8 hours of daylight at the winter solstice and about 16 hours in late June, so in summer the view stays lit well into the evening.

Theatre Newfoundland Labrador, founded in 1979, is based in the city and runs a summer repertory festival from May to September at Cow Head in Gros Morne National Park, north of Corner Brook. The Corner Brook Royals, 1986 Allan Cup champions, play home games at the Corner Brook Civic Centre, an arena built in 1997 that was one of the main venues when the city hosted the 1999 Canada Games.

In winter the main draw is Marble Mountain Ski Resort at Steady Brook, about 7 kilometers (4 miles) east of the city on Mount Musgrave in the Long Range Mountains. Its summit stands at 546 meters (1,791 feet), with a vertical drop of 536 meters (1,759 feet), 39 trails and four lifts, and the resort averages about 5 meters (16 feet) of snow a season. The Blow-Me-Down trails are the area’s cross-country ski grounds.
