Mark Arendz Ski Park Webcam – PEI’s Only Ski Hill

The Mark Arendz Ski Park Webcam looks across the base area at Brookvale, Prince Edward Island, and up the cleared main slope toward the top of the chairlift. Spruce and fir crowd both edges of the run, and the lift towers climb the middle of the frame in a straight line. In front of the camera there is a fenced flat where the tubing and beginner lanes are laid out, with the lodge deck at the left edge and the lift base terminal in the center, still wearing the livery it was given for the 2023 Canada Winter Games. The hill is small by Canadian standards, and it is the only downhill ski area in the province, so one wide shot holds essentially all of it.

About Mark Arendz Provincial Ski Park

Brookvale sits in the central part of Queens County, at 2018 Route 13, about 22 kilometers (14 miles) southwest of Charlottetown. The site operated for years as the Brookvale Winter Activity Park and was renamed in 2018 for Mark Arendz, the Para-Nordic skier and biathlete who learned to race here. The alpine side is compact by design: a vertical drop of 76 meters (250 feet), nine trails split roughly 30 percent beginner, 40 percent intermediate and 30 percent most difficult, and two lifts with a combined uphill capacity of 4,800 people an hour. That is the whole of lift-served skiing on Prince Edward Island, and the camera has all of it in one frame.

Arendz was born in Charlottetown in 1990 and lost his left arm at the age of seven when it was caught in the blades of a grain auger. He went on to become a five-time Paralympian and a two-time Paralympic champion. At Sochi in 2014 he took silver in the 7.5 kilometer standing biathlon and bronze over 12.5 kilometers standing, the first Canadian to win two biathlon medals at a Winter Paralympics, and his old club, the Brookvale Nordic Ski Centre, named one of the trails here after him soon afterward. Four years later at PyeongChang he won six medals, a Canadian record for a single Winter Paralympic Games, and carried the flag at the closing ceremony.

The province spent 6.2 million dollars renovating and updating the facilities before the 2023 Canada Winter Games, which brought biathlon and cross-country skiing to Brookvale along with other snow sports. The nordic and snowshoe trails run through the woods behind the alpine hill, out of the camera’s view, and the same ground carries mountain bike trails through spring, summer and fall.

January is also one of the wetter months at 101.4 millimeters (3.99 inches) of precipitation, and on this coast a single storm can deliver snow, rain and freezing rain in turn.

Spring comes late. April averages 3.0 C (37.4 F) and May 9.1 C (48.4 F), so the run stays patchy and brown for weeks after the lifts stop turning. July is the warmest month at 19.0 C (66.2 F), with daily highs near 23.6 C (74.5 F), and by then the slope is fully grassed over and cut for the bike season. September still averages 14.6 C (58.3 F) and October 8.6 C (47.5 F), when the hardwoods along the edge of the run turn. The annual mean is 5.9 C (42.6 F).

Strathgartney Provincial Park is 9.4 kilometers (5.8 miles) from the hill, and its trails connect through to Bonshaw Provincial Park, so the two can be walked as a single outing in the Bonshaw Hills. Victoria, a historic seaport in the township of Lot 29 at the southwestern edge of Queens County, is 9.5 kilometers (5.9 miles) south. For a longer ride or walk, the Confederation Trail runs 273 kilometers (170 miles) across the island, laid in the 1990s on the rail bed Canadian National abandoned on the last day of 1989.

Charlottetown is 22.3 kilometers (13.9 miles) northeast. Province House, at the corner of Richmond and Great George Streets, has housed the Prince Edward Island legislature since 1847 and is the second-oldest seat of government in Canada. The Confederation Bridge crosses to the mainland from Borden-Carleton, 24.6 kilometers (15.3 miles) west of the park, and the north shore beaches at Cavendish are 23.6 kilometers (14.6 miles) away.
