About Collingwood

Collingwood is a town of 24,811 people (2021 census) in Simcoe County, on Nottawasaga Bay at the southern point of Georgian Bay. Settled in the 1840s, it was incorporated in 1858, nine years before Confederation, and named after Admiral Cuthbert Collingwood, Lord Nelson’s second in command at the Battle of Trafalgar. The town covers 33.15 square kilometers (12.80 square miles) of land, so the downtown in this view is never far from the water.

The town grew on the water. The Collingwood Shipyards opened on May 24, 1883, and on September 12, 1901 they launched the Huronic, the first steel-hulled ship built in Canada. The yards built ships for more than a century before closing in September 1986 in the face of overseas competition. The Collingwood Terminals grain elevator, built in 1929, handled grain for 64 years until 1993 and still stands on the harbour.

The brick storefronts in this view are part of a protected historic district. Downtown Collingwood was the first Heritage Conservation District in Canada to be added to the Canadian Register of Historic Places, formally recognized on December 2, 2002.

Down at the harbour, the old Collingwood Terminals grain elevator still marks the waterfront where the shipyards once launched their ships, including the Huronic in 1901.
