About this webcam

The Blue Mountain Webcam brings six live views of Blue Mountain Resort in The Blue Mountains, Ontario, about 8 kilometers (5 miles) west of downtown Collingwood. The main camera looks from the Monterra side across a pond and a stretch of mown grass to the row of Village buildings at the foot of the hill, with ski runs cut into the Niagara Escarpment rising behind them. Five more tabs switch to Village Base, Adventure Park, Calamity Lane, Valley Base and South Base, so one page covers several corners of Ontario’s largest ski resort. In winter the runs turn white, and on many of them the lights come on at dusk for night skiing. Through summer the hill goes green and the Village paths and activity areas take over.

About Blue Mountain Resort

Blue Mountain sits on the Niagara Escarpment near the southern shore of Georgian Bay, in the municipality of The Blue Mountains in Grey County. Jozo Weider and Gordon Peter Campbell founded the ski area in 1941 on escarpment land acquired from the Toronto Ski Club and the Blue Mountain Ski Club. The base lies at about 230 meters (750 feet) above sea level and the top at 450 meters (1,480 feet), a vertical drop of 220 meters (720 feet). No ski resort in Ontario is bigger, and Blue Mountain counts 43 named trails across 148 hectares (365 acres) of skiable terrain.

Five high-speed six-seat chairlifts, a quad, a triple and four surface lifts move up to 26,750 riders an hour. Snowmaking covers 145 hectares (360 acres), and the longest run, Gord’s Groove, measures 1.6 kilometers (1 mile). Construction of the pedestrian Village at the base began in 2000. Today it holds more than 1,000 accommodation units and about 45 restaurants, bars and shops, according to the resort. Alterra Mountain Company has owned Blue Mountain since 2017, and the resort is part of the Ikon Pass.

What Each Blue Mountain Camera Shows

The Monterra tab gives the widest picture. A pond fills the lower left of the frame, open lawn and a path curve across the middle, and the Village buildings line the base of the hill, with several runs separated by strips of forest above them. It is the quickest way to tell whether the slopes are white, green or lost in cloud.

Village Base sits on the Village side of the resort, with young trees in the foreground. The Adventure Park camera, which the resort files with its Village cameras, looks over curving paved paths, lamp posts, a covered shelter and a row of tall poles. Calamity Lane and Valley Base cover the Valley area. In a January recording, Calamity Lane looked straight up a wide groomed run, with tree islands near the top, a small hut at the lower right and light poles along the left edge that switched on as daylight faded. At Valley Base, tall evergreens stand on the right of the frame. The South Base camera watches the South Base area, home to the South Base Eatery.

Weather and Climate at Blue Mountain

Winters are cold and snowy. Collingwood’s 1991 to 2020 climate normals put the average January high at -1.3 C (30 F) and the low at -8.7 C (16 F), and the resort averages around 390 centimeters (154 inches) of snow a season. Low cloud and fog can settle on the escarpment, as it did in that January recording from Calamity Lane, and the top of the run then fades into grey. Thirty of the 43 trails are lit, so on winter evenings the slopes can stay bright long after sunset.

Summer is warm. The average July high in Collingwood is 25.3 C (78 F), with nights around 16.2 C (61 F), and the slopes behind the Village turn green. Spring and fall are the quiet seasons on the cameras, between the ski lifts and the summer attractions. The leafy trees between the runs, bare in the winter footage, can turn color in autumn.

Things to Do Near Blue Mountain

In winter the draw is the hill itself, with 43 named trails, four terrain parks and night skiing on 30 lit runs. Once the snow is gone the resort runs the Ridge Runner Mountain Coaster, a summer gondola, the Wind Rider Triple Zips, ropes courses, climbing walls and the Cascade Putting Course, and Monterra Golf opens for the season. The resort lists 34 kilometers (21 miles) of hiking trails for summer, and Scandinave Spa nearby offers massages and other treatments.

Collingwood, 8 kilometers (5 miles) to the east, is the nearest town, with 24,811 residents at the 2021 census. It sits on Nottawasaga Bay at the southern end of Georgian Bay, and the old Collingwood Terminals grain elevator, closed in 1993, still stands at the entrance to the harbor. Back at the resort, a private beach property is on the list of summer attractions.
