About this webcam

The Centennial College Webcam looks down from a rooftop onto the artificial turf soccer field at the college’s Progress Campus in Scarborough, in the east end of Toronto. A banner reading “Home of the Centennial Colts” runs along the near fence, the roofs of the covered player benches sit just below the camera, and a line of trees closes off the far side of the pitch. This is a working campus field, so what happens on it follows the college year: varsity soccer in the fall, drop-in play and community rentals in spring and summer, and an empty pitch late at night. The same YouTube broadcast has been running since July 2021, and from December to March the turf is played under a seasonal sports dome.

About Centennial College and the Colts Field

Centennial College is the oldest publicly funded college in Ontario. Its first site, Warden Woods Campus, opened on October 17, 1966, with 514 students, and the college now supports about 22,000 full-time students. Progress Campus, at 941 Progress Avenue near Markham Road and Highway 401, is its largest campus, and its Library and Academic Facility and expanded Athletic and Wellness Centre both opened in September 2011.

The turf field this camera watches opened for its first season in 2017. The college lists about 7,700 square meters (83,000 square feet) of artificial turf, marked as a 94 by 70 meter (308 by 230 foot) full field, with Musco LED stadium lighting, a Nevco scoreboard, sheltered player benches and stands for up to 150 spectators. From the camera’s perch, the Colts banner and the bench roofs fill the foreground, white lines and the center circle spread across the green, small portable goals stand around the edges, and two tall light masts rise on the far side in front of the trees. A wide-angle lens bends the horizon a little.

The field is the home ground of the Centennial Colts women’s and men’s varsity soccer teams, and outside their season it hosts drop-in recreation, extramural leagues and groups renting the pitch by the hour. The Centennial Sports Dome followed, opened with a ribbon cutting on January 23, 2024, so the field could be used all year.

Weather and Climate in Scarborough

Toronto has a humid continental climate softened by Lake Ontario. Environment and Climate Change Canada’s 1991 to 2020 normals for the downtown station put the average January high just below 0 C (31 F) and the low around -7 C (20 F), with about 122 centimeters (48 inches) of snow a year. Snow has been recorded as early as October 1 and as late as May 28. The college rents the turf under the dome from December to March, and the athletics department announced the dome closed for the season at the end of March 2026, so a winter visit to this stream is likely to find a very different scene from the open pitch of the fall.

April averages a high of 11.7 C (53 F) and a low of 3.9 C (39 F), and the open-air season on the turf starts that month. July is the warmest month, with average highs of 27 C (81 F) and lows near 18 C (65 F). October brings highs of about 14.6 C (58 F) and lows of 7.7 C (46 F) in the middle of the Colts soccer season, and the tree line behind the far fence can turn red and gold before the leaves drop.

Things to Do Near Centennial College

The Toronto Zoo is the big draw in this corner of the city, about 5 kilometers (3.1 miles) northeast of the field in a straight line. Covering 287 hectares (710 acres) on the western edge of Rouge Park, it is the largest zoo in Canada, with more than 3,000 animals from over 300 species across seven zoogeographic regions, and it opens every day of the year. Scarborough Town Centre sits just under 3 kilometers (1.8 miles) west of campus. The mall opened in 1973 beside the Scarborough Civic Centre and Albert Campbell Square and holds roughly 250 stores.

Thomson Memorial Park at 1005 Brimley Road, about 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) southwest, is home to the Scarborough Historical Museum and houses from the 1790s that belonged to the Thomsons, the founding family of Scarborough, with paths along West Highland Creek. Roughly 7 to 8 kilometers (4 to 5 miles) south, the Scarborough Bluffs rise as high as 90 meters (300 feet) above Lake Ontario along 15 kilometers (9.3 miles) of shoreline, and Bluffer’s Park is the only one of the eleven parks along them with a beach.
