About this webcam

The Timmins Webcam is the City of Timmins’ City Hall camera in northeastern Ontario, and it moves. From high above the street it pans between views: close across the road to a row of downtown storefronts, including a grey two-storey building with a large mural on its side wall, a restaurant and the parking lot between them, and then out to a wide view of a downtown intersection with its traffic lights, crosswalks and the rooftops of the city beyond. A second tab moves to Gillies Lake, where the city’s lakeside camera looks over a park lawn crossed by gravel paths, past a flagpole flying the Canadian flag, to the water and the houses on the far shore. Between them the two cameras show downtown traffic and lakeside quiet, through a winter that lasts a long time this far north.

About Timmins

Timmins is a city of 41,145 people (2021 census) in the Cochrane District of northeastern Ontario, on the Mattagami River. It covers 2,955 square kilometers (1,141 square miles) of land, although the built-up urban area is only about 18.5 square kilometers (7.1 square miles). The city was incorporated on January 1, 1912, and takes its name from Henry and Noah Timmins, shopkeeper brothers from Mattawa.

Gold made Timmins. The Porcupine Gold Rush followed the extension of the railway to Cochrane in 1907, and three great mines grew out of it. The Hollinger mine produced nearly 20 million troy ounces before it closed in 1968, the McIntyre about 11 million before 1988, and the Dome mine about 17 million over 107 years before closing in 2017.

Timmins is a bilingual city, where 50.8 percent of residents speak both English and French. The singer Shania Twain is one of its best-known former residents, and her concert at Hollinger Park on July 1, 1999 drew an estimated 22,000 people.

Weather and Climate in Timmins

Timmins has a cold continental climate. At Timmins Victor M. Power Airport, January averages a high of minus 10 C (13 F) and a low of minus 22 C (minus 8 F), and the record low is minus 45.6 C (minus 50 F), set on February 1, 1962. Spring arrives late: April averages 7 C (45 F) by day and still drops to minus 5 C (22 F) at night. July is warm at 24 C (76 F), with nights around 11 C (52 F), and October cools to 9 C (48 F).

The city receives about 796 millimeters (31.3 inches) of precipitation a year, including around 308 centimeters (121 inches) of snow, so the cameras spend a long stretch of the year in white. On the Timmins Webcam, snowbanks can line the downtown street for months, and Gillies Lake can freeze over in the depth of winter. Summer brings green lawns and open water to the lake view, and autumn covers the park paths in fallen leaves.

Things to Do Near Timmins

Gillies Lake, in the Schumacher area of the city, is a recreation area with a boardwalk and the paths seen on the camera. Hollinger Park, named after the great gold mine, is where Shania Twain played her 1999 concert in front of an estimated 22,000 people.

Timmins sits on the Mattagami River in the Cochrane District, and the story of its gold mines, from the Hollinger and McIntyre to the Dome, which closed in 2017 after 107 years, is the story of the city itself.
