About this webcam

The Parry Sound Webcam looks out from above the Town Dock in Parry Sound, Ontario, across the harbour to the wooded shore of the sound on the eastern side of Georgian Bay. In the foreground, trees frame the roofs of the dockside buildings and the parking area along the waterfront, and beyond them sailboats and cruisers ride at their moorings in the harbour. Two more tabs widen the picture: one looks down on a downtown intersection under a “Welcome to Parry Sound” caption, and the other watches the docks of Point Pleasant Marina just south of town. In summer the harbour can be full of boats, and in winter the same view can turn to ice and snow.

About Parry Sound

Parry Sound is a town of 6,879 people (2021 census) on the eastern shore of the sound it is named after, 225 kilometers (140 miles) north of Toronto and 160 kilometers (99 miles) south of Sudbury. The sound itself was named after the Arctic explorer Sir William Edward Parry by Captain Henry Wolsey Bayfield. The town was founded in 1857 and incorporated in 1887, and its harbour is known as the world’s deepest natural freshwater port.

The town sits in the middle of the 30,000 Islands, the maze of rocky islands along this part of Georgian Bay, and the coast here is part of the Georgian Bay Biosphere, one of Canada’s UNESCO biosphere reserves. Parry Sound is also the birthplace of the hockey player Bobby Orr, honored by the Bobby Orr Hall of Fame. The town has the Charles W. Stockey Centre for the Performing Arts and hosts the Festival of the Sound, a classical music festival.
