About this webcam
The Bari Sardo Webcam looks out over the beach at Torre di Bari, the seaside hamlet of Bari Sardo on the east coast of Sardinia, Italy. The old Spanish watchtower that gave the hamlet its name stands on a low rocky point at the right of the frame, with the Tyrrhenian Sea running out to a flat horizon behind it. In the foreground is the seafront terrace, a curve of red paving with white stone benches, young palms and a railing above the sand, and a paved stairway drops from its edge to the beach. On this coast the sun rises over the sea ahead of the camera. The town council, the Comune di Bari Sardo, has streamed this view on YouTube since May 2023.
About Bari Sardo
Bari Sardo is a town of 3,767 people, counted in May 2026, in the Ogliastra area of eastern Sardinia. The town itself sits inland at 51 meters (167 feet) above sea level, and its coastal hamlet of Torre di Bari lies about 3.5 kilometers (2.2 miles) east-southeast of the center in a straight line. The municipality covers 37.4 square kilometers (14.5 square miles), and its shore takes in part of Cea beach to the north, the tower beach, Sa Marina Tramalitza to the south and the beach at Planargia.
The tower in the frame was recommended in 1572 and finished by about 1639 by the Royal Tower Administration, the body that guarded Sardinia’s coast against pirate and corsair raids under Spanish rule. It is a truncated cone of local granite and basalt, 12.75 meters (41.8 feet) high and about 11 meters (36 feet) across at the base, narrowing to roughly 8 meters (26 feet) at the gun platform. The site mattered because of the nearby mouth of the Rio Mannu, a source of fresh water for anyone landing on this coast. An alcalde, the tower’s captain, kept watch with three or four soldiers, three cannons, two swivel guns and two muskets, and the build cost of about 250 scudi was charged to the local people.
From the top, lookouts could see about 15 kilometers (9 miles) and pass signals to the San Gemiliano and Bellavista towers to the north and the Capo Sferracavallo tower to the south. A Moorish raid damaged the tower in the mid-18th century, repairs went on into the 1830s, and a major restoration began in the late 1990s. Locals call the water on the north side of the beach Mari de is Ominis, the sea of the men, and the south side Mari de is Feminas, the sea of the women.

The stairway in the frame leads straight down to the tower beach. South of the tower, Sa Marina Tramalitza is a quieter stretch of pale sand and clear water that rarely gets crowded. To the north, Cea beach has more than a kilometer (0.6 miles) of soft white sand and two red porphyry sea stacks, Is Scoglius Arrubius, rising about 20 meters (66 feet) out of the water some 300 meters (980 feet) offshore. The same red rock forms the Rocce Rosse at Arbatax, about 12 kilometers (7.5 miles) north of the tower in a straight line and about 1.5 kilometers (0.9 miles) from Arbatax harbor.
Inland, the municipality has 14 surviving nuraghi, the Bronze Age stone towers found all over Sardinia, and Nuraghe Sellersu is the best known of them. The giants’ tombs of Canali, Uli and Pitzu Teccu, and the Domus de Janas rock-cut tombs at Pizzu ‘e Monti and Funtana su Rettore, show how far back settlement here goes, and the Teccu plateau is both an archaeological and a natural site. Back in town, Bari Sardo is known for its weaving: carpets, tapestries, blankets and linens. In July the procession of San Giovanni walks from the town down to Sa Marina, and the Sagra de su Nenniri is held at the San Giovanni church there on the second Sunday of the month.
