About this webcam

The Crystal River Webcam looks across Kings Bay from PaddleTail Waterfront Lodge in Crystal River, Florida, where more than 70 springs feed the bay at the head of the Crystal River. From a raised position the camera takes in sailboats riding at anchor on calm water, a covered pontoon boat in the foreground, a large boat storage building on the far shore and low wooded islands, all under a wide Gulf coast sky. Boats can come and go through the day, the wind ruffles or flattens the water, and the light shifts from morning to late afternoon. Kings Bay is also the largest natural winter refuge for manatees on Florida’s Gulf coast, and in the cold months several hundred of them gather in its springs.

About Crystal River

Crystal River is a small Gulf coast city in Citrus County, with 3,396 residents at the 2020 census. It was settled in the mid-1800s, incorporated as a town in 1903 and became the City of Crystal River on July 3, 1923. US 19 runs through it, leading 11 kilometers (7 miles) south to Homosassa Springs and 74 kilometers (46 miles) north to Chiefland, while State Road 44 heads 27 kilometers (17 miles) east to Inverness.

Kings Bay covers about 600 acres (243 hectares), and its springs together form the second largest spring group in Florida. They hold the bay close to 22 C (72 F) all year, and the Crystal River carries the water about 10 kilometers (6 miles) from the bay’s northwest side to the Gulf. The best known vents are Three Sisters Springs, a clover-shaped cluster of Pretty Sister, Big Sister and Little Sister, along with Hunter Spring and Tarpon Hole. The Southwest Florida Water Management District has completed restoration projects around the bay, from a living shoreline at Hunter Springs Park to a wetland treatment system at Three Sisters Springs.

The lodge behind the camera takes its name from the paddle-shaped tail of the manatee, and its adventure center runs manatee swims and boat tours of Kings Bay. Crystal River National Wildlife Refuge, established in 1983, is the only national wildlife refuge created specifically to protect the threatened Florida manatee, and Three Sisters Springs is one of its units.

Weather and Climate in Crystal River

Crystal River has a humid subtropical climate. Climate data from 2015 to 2024 puts January highs at about 19 C (67 F) and lows near 10 C (50 F). By July and August, highs average 31 C (88 F) and nights hold around 24 C (76 F). Most of the year’s rain falls from June through September, peaking in August at roughly 220 millimeters (8.7 inches), and in that season the sky over the bay can fill with towering afternoon clouds and passing storms. March, April, October and November are the mildest months, with afternoon highs of about 24 to 28 C (75 to 82 F).

The bay barely changes temperature, so the seasons show up in its wildlife as much as in its weather. When the Gulf drops below about 20 C (68 F), manatees leave it for the warmer springs of Kings Bay, and in a cold winter several hundred can be in the area at once. The refuge’s manatee season at Three Sisters Springs runs from November 15 to March 31.

Things to Do Near Crystal River

Three Sisters Springs is where most visitors head first. A boardwalk around the springs lets you watch manatees without getting in the water, and the refuge runs daily programs there through manatee season. Crystal River is also one of the only places in the world where visitors can swim alongside the threatened Florida manatee. The refuge asks swimmers for passive observation, which means no chasing, riding or grabbing the animals, and feeding a wild manatee is illegal. PaddleTail Lodge’s own adventure center is one of the places to book a swim or a boat tour of Kings Bay.

Ellie Schiller Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park is 11 kilometers (7 miles) south on US 19, with an underwater observatory called the Fish Bowl, three resident manatees, Florida panthers and a boat ride down Pepper Creek from its US 19 visitor center. The county’s visitor bureau also points anglers to the area’s tarpon fishing, and in summer the Citrus County coast holds its scalloping season, a family underwater hunt for bay scallops.
