About this webcam

The Fernie Golf Club Webcam looks out from the club grounds in Fernie, British Columbia, across mown fairways and tree-lined holes to the Rocky Mountain peaks that close in the Elk Valley. A paved cart path curves through the foreground, a second path loops past an old wooden cart in the middle distance, and a white sand bunker sits on the fairway to the left. Birches, dark conifers and a few deciduous trees break up the grass, with a long ridge filling the upper left of the frame and a pale rocky summit standing out on the right. The scene follows the seasons closely: green from spring, gold leaves scattered over the grass by mid-October, and typically deep snow over the whole course through the winter.

About Fernie Golf Club

Fernie Golf Club opened in 1918 and marked its centenary in 2018. The course is an 18-hole, par 70 layout of 5,995 meters (6,556 yards), played along mature tree-lined fairways with water hazards placed to catch a loose shot. The clubhouse at 201 Fairway Drive was built in 1996 and has since been renovated. It holds the pro shop and a full-service restaurant, and the club also runs a driving range, a practice green, cart and club rentals, and lessons from CPGA professionals. The camera belongs to the club, which links its live feed from the menu of its own website.

The town around the course sits at 1,010 meters (3,314 feet) on the Elk River in the East Kootenay region, and counted 6,320 residents in the 2021 Census. It was incorporated as a city in July 1904 and takes its name from William Fernie, the prospector who established the local coal industry. Fire shaped the place early on. Much of the downtown burned in 1904 and was rebuilt in brick and stone meant to be fireproof, and then a larger fire on August 1, 1908 swept through the rebuilt core as well.

Mountains hem the town in on every side. Three Sisters and Mount Proctor stand to the north, Mount Hosmer to the northeast, Fernie Ridge to the east and Morrissey Ridge to the southeast. The Lizard Range rises to the southwest and carries the ski runs of Fernie Alpine Resort. Coal Creek, Lizard Creek and Fairy Creek all drain into the Elk River as it passes through town.

Weather and Climate in Fernie

Fernie has a snowy mountain climate. January averages a high of -0.7 C (31 F) and a low of -9.6 C (15 F), and the town collects about 325 centimeters (128 inches) of snow in an average year, out of a total annual precipitation of 1,227 millimeters (48.3 inches). Through the winter the fairways on camera usually lie under a continuous white cover, with only the trees and the peaks breaking it up. Spring arrives on the valley floor well before it reaches the ridges, so the grass can be greening while the summits behind it are still white. The driving range opens in mid-April and the course itself in early to mid-May.

July brings average highs of 25.1 C (77 F) and lows of 8.4 C (47 F), so even midsummer nights are cool at this elevation. Summer is the playing season, and the camera can catch carts and golfers moving along the paths during the day. Autumn turns the deciduous trees yellow and gold, and their leaves collect on the grass in front of the lens, as they did in mid-October 2026. Play runs daily until Thanksgiving Monday in October, so from then until the following May the frame generally shows an empty course waiting for snow.

Things to Do Near Fernie Golf Club

Fernie Alpine Resort, on the slopes of the Lizard Range, is the town’s best-known draw in winter, and Island Lake Catskiing runs snowcat skiing out of Fernie for anyone after deeper powder. In the warmer months, Mount Fernie Provincial Park has a network of short forest trails through old cedar and hemlock stands along Lizard Creek, and most of its loops take well under an hour. For a harder outing, the Lizard Lake trail climbs steeply out of the park to a small subalpine tarn with wide views of the Rockies.

In town, the Fernie Museum tells the story of the coal boom, the mine explosions, the fires, a banking scandal and the rum-running of the prohibition era, ending with the town’s turn toward outdoor tourism. The Elk River is a freestone river holding westslope cutthroat trout and bull trout, and local fly fishing outfitters guide anglers on it through the season. Historic brick buildings line the downtown streets, with the Lizard Range rising straight behind the rooftops. Golfers with more time can also play St. Eugene in Cranbrook, about 52 kilometers (32 miles) to the west in a straight line.
