About this webcam
The St. Eugene Golf Resort Webcam looks out from the historic Mission Building near Cranbrook, British Columbia, across an 18-hole golf course and toward the Rocky Mountains. The main view drops over the resort’s fenced outdoor pool to striped fairways, sand bunkers and a pond, with conifer forest and a line of pale, eroded bluffs on the far side. A second view faces the front of the property, where a tree-lined lawn leads out over open fields to the jagged skyline of the Rockies. The scene shifts with the hour and the season. On clear mornings the sun climbs over the peaks, fog can lie along the valley floor beneath them, and by early October the trees on the lawn have turned gold.
About St. Eugene Golf Resort
St. Eugene sits on the plain of the St. Mary River, between the Rocky Mountains and the Purcell Mountains, a short drive from Cranbrook. The city stands at 921 meters (3,022 feet) and counted 20,499 residents in the 2021 census. The resort brings together a 125-room hotel, the Casino of the Rockies, a KOA RV park and the Ktunaxa Interpretive Centre at 7777 Mission Road. The golf course came first, opening in 2000. Les Furber laid it out over more than 121 hectares (300 acres) of grassland beside the river, at 6,407 meters (7,007 yards) from the back tees, and Golf Digest placed it among the top three best new courses in Canada in 2001.
The St. Eugene Golf Resort Webcam player has two tabs. Golf Course, the main view, looks down on the pool and its lounge chairs, a patio of picnic tables beside a red-sided building with a cupola, and a putting green dotted with small flags, then out across the fairways to the pond and the forest edge. Rocky Mountains, the second tab, faces the front lawn, where a broad path runs between rows of tall trees toward a parking area, parked RVs and open fields, with a white church spire at the right edge. Above it all rises a long wall of peaks. The resort says its camera above the Mission Building takes in Fisher Peak, known on maps as Mount Fisher, which tops the Hughes Range at 2,843 meters (9,327 feet).
The main building carries a hard history. From 1912 to 1970 it was the St. Eugene Mission residential school, run by the Oblates of Mary Immaculate, and more than 5,000 children from across British Columbia and Alberta attended it, according to the Ktunaxa Nation. After it closed, the building was left to decay. The Ktunaxa communities and the Shuswap Indian Band voted to restore it, guided by Elder Mary Paul’s words that since the culture of her people was taken away inside the school, “it should be within that building that it is returned.” The hotel opened in 2003, and since June 2017 the resort has been owned outright by four Ktunaxa communities and the Shuswap Indian Band.
Weather and Climate at St. Eugene Golf Resort
Cranbrook has one of the drier, sunnier climates in British Columbia, and the resort calls it the sunniest city in the province. The airport records about 2,190 hours of sunshine and only 385 millimeters (15.2 inches) of precipitation a year. Spring warms slowly, with April afternoons averaging 12.8 C (55 F) and nights around freezing. Summer is warm and dry: July highs average 26.9 C (80 F) and lows 11.3 C (52 F), and heat can spike, as on August 10, 2018, when the airport hit a record 40.5 C (104.9 F).
Autumn turns fast. October averages 11.4 C (53 F) by day and just below freezing at night, and in early October the trees on the front lawn go yellow and gold while fog can fill the valley below the Rockies on still mornings. Winter brings an average January high of -1.9 C (29 F) and lows near -10 C (14 F), with about 133 centimeters (52 inches) of snow a season, so the course can sit under snow in midwinter. On clear mornings the sun rises over the right side of the mountain view, putting the peaks in silhouette with some lens glare, while the Golf Course tab tends to stay clear of it.
Things to Do Near St. Eugene Golf Resort
Start on site. The Ktunaxa Interpretive Centre, run by the Ktunaxa Nation Council inside the Mission Building, shows historic artifacts, contemporary art, archival photographs and traditional stone, bead, hide, wood and cloth work, with displays on Ktunaxa daily life, horsemanship and canoe making. Its two-hour guided experience combines a 30-minute centre tour, an hour-long tour of the Mission Building and Red Brick School, a 35-minute documentary built on the accounts of Ktunaxa students who were made to attend. The centre lists weekday hours of 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and tours are booked in advance.
The golf course has a driving range and offers lessons, and the Casino of the Rockies adds slots, electronic table games, a restaurant and a bar with a 5.5-meter (18-foot) screen for sports. Off the property, Cranbrook’s airport is about five minutes away and Kimberley about 20 minutes, reached on Highway 95A. Fort Steele, a preserved heritage town, lies in the same corner of the East Kootenay, and trail guides list a route up Fisher Peak.
