The Glacier 3000 Webcam looks out from the Scex Rouge at 2,971 meters (9,747 feet), the summit above the Tsanfleuron Glacier in the Swiss canton of Vaud. It is a rotating panorama camera at the top station, so one frame can hold the Peak Walk by Tissot suspension bridge, the dark cube of Mario Botta’s terminal building, the ice running south toward the Quille du Diable, and a horizon of Alpine summits above a sea of cloud. About Glacier 3000

Glacier 3000 is the ski and excursion area run by Gstaad 3000 AG from the Col du Pillon, a road pass at 1,546 meters (5,072 feet) about 3 kilometers (1.9 miles) north of the camera. The cable car from the pass first opened in July 1964 and climbs roughly 1,400 meters (4,600 feet) to the Scex Rouge station at 2,950 meters (9,678 feet), where the panoramic restaurant occupies a building by the Swiss architect Mario Botta.

The Peak Walk by Tissot is what most people come for. It is 107 meters (351 feet) long and 80 centimeters (31 inches) wide, and it opened in October 2014 as the first suspension bridge anywhere built to connect two mountain peaks. The deck runs from a lower summit called View Point across to the Scex Rouge, which stands 5 meters (16 feet) higher and was closed to visitors until the bridge was built.

South of the summit the Tsanfleuron Glacier fills a basin between about 3,000 and 2,500 meters. It has retreated by roughly half a kilometer (0.3 miles) since 1960, and in the hot summer of 2022 it parted from the neighboring Scex Rouge Glacier and uncovered the Tsanfleuron Pass, under ice since Roman times. East on the skyline the Oldenhorn reaches 3,123 meters (10,246 feet), where Vaud, Bern and Valais meet.

Weather and Climate at Glacier 3000

This is a high, cold place and the Glacier 3000 Webcam shows it. January days average about minus 9 C (16 F) and nights near minus 17 C (2 F). Even in July and August the high sits near 9 C (48 F) and nights hover around 1 C (34 F), which is why the ice survives the summer. October brings roughly 2 C (35 F) by afternoon and minus 7 C (20 F) overnight.

Cloud behaves differently at this height. The camera often looks down on a deck of cloud filling the valleys while the summit stands in sun, and the reverse happens too, with the lens inside the cloud and little in frame but the railing.

Things to Do Near Glacier 3000

The Alpine Coaster runs beside the Peak Walk, a 1 kilometer rail toboggan at 2,971 meters that reaches about 40 kilometers per hour (25 miles per hour) and operates from June to late September. The Glacier Walk goes the other way, 3 kilometers each way across the ice from the Ice Express chairlift to the Refuge l’Espace beside the Quille du Diable, a 2,908 meter rock tower 2.5 kilometers (1.6 miles) south of the camera.

In winter there are 25 kilometers (15.5 miles) of pistes between 1,350 and 2,940 meters across three cantons, and the red run from the Scex Rouge to Oldenegg is about 8 kilometers (5 miles), the longest in the Vaud Alps. Lower down, Lac Retaud at 1,685 meters (5,528 feet) is a short walk from the pass road.
