About this webcam

The Nissi Beach Webcam looks out from the Vassos Nissi Plage Hotel over Nissi Beach in Ayia Napa, on the southeast coast of Cyprus. The beach road and its parked cars run along the bottom of the frame. Above them, palm trees and rows of umbrellas line the sand on the left, low white beach buildings sit on the right, and the turquoise shallows curve away toward a rocky point with hotel blocks behind it. The small islet that gives the beach its name sits on the right, with people wading out to it and boats moored off its tip. Open sea fills the horizon, where jet skis and speedboats leave white wakes on warm afternoons. Even in early October the shallows can be full of swimmers.

About Nissi Beach

Nissi Beach lies about 3.5 kilometers (2.2 miles) west of the center of Ayia Napa, in Famagusta District. Its name comes from the Greek word for island, nisi, after the low islet just offshore. The islet is covered in scrubby local vegetation and shelters the rest of the beach from the open sea. A strip of sand and shallow water links it to the shore, so it can be reached on foot, and the official Visit Cyprus site calls this sand lane a natural landmark of the region. On camera it shows as a pale band in the water on the right, usually dotted with people walking out.

The whole crescent runs for about 500 meters (1,640 feet). Visit Cyprus lists the stretch by the islet as Nissi Bay, a 300 meter (984 foot) Blue Flag beach of fine golden sand with lifeguards on duty from April to October. In 2011 Nissi Beach topped TripAdvisor’s list of the best beaches in Europe, and in 2018 it ranked third on Instagram’s list of the most popular beaches.

People were here long before the hotels. Excavations at Nissi Beach in 2005 turned up fire-lighting equipment about 12,000 years old. Ayia Napa itself has a much shorter story: apart from its monastery, the area was uninhabited until about 1790, when settlers arrived from Greece. The town counted around 3,200 year-round residents in 2001.

Weather and Climate at Nissi Beach

Summer is long, hot and close to rainless. Average highs reach 29 C (85 F) in June and 31 to 32 C (88 to 90 F) in July and August, with nights around 24 to 25 C (75 to 77 F). The sea warms to nearly 29 C (84 F) by August, which is when the shallows on camera are at their busiest. Autumn stays warm for weeks. October still averages highs around 27 C (81 F) and November about 22 C (72 F).

Winter is mild and brings most of the year’s rain. January highs average about 16 C (61 F) with lows near 10 C (50 F), and December and January each see around 60 millimeters (2.4 inches) of rain. Spring warms quickly, from about 19 C (66 F) in March to 22 C (72 F) in April and 26 C (79 F) by May. From June to September rainfall is close to zero, so a gray sky on camera is rare in summer.

Things to Do Near Nissi Beach

On the beach itself, Visit Cyprus lists sunbeds, umbrellas and water sports facilities, and jet skis are a regular sight crossing the bay on camera. Wading out over the sand lane to the islet is the classic thing to do here. Ayia Napa Monastery stands in the middle of town. Its oldest walls date from the Middle Byzantine period, before 1191, and most of its buildings are from the 14th to 18th centuries.

Ayia Napa has two museums about the sea: the Thalassa Agia Napa Municipal Museum, founded in 2005, and the Tornaritis-Pierides Museum of Marine Life, open since 1992. The Ayia Napa Sculpture Park displays more than 200 sculptures, and the Museum of Underwater Sculptures, opened in 2021, places its works on the seabed for snorkelers and divers. The Makronissos Tombs are the area’s best-known archaeological site, and WaterWorld water park has been open since 1996. East of town, Cape Greco National Forest Park covers the headland between Ayia Napa and Protaras, with sea caves carved into its limestone cliffs. The cape is also a bottleneck for migrating birds in spring and autumn.
