The Pattaya Beach Road Webcam looks down on Pattaya Beach from high on a condo tower near Soi 1, at the north end of Beach Road, and takes in almost the whole bay in one wide sweep. The sand curves away down the right of the frame beside a line of palms and the beachfront promenade, with hotel and apartment blocks packed along the left side and a Ferris wheel standing above the rooftops. Out on the water, dozens of speedboats ride at anchor while jet skis draw white wakes across the bay. At the far end, towers climb the wooded slopes of Phra Tamnak Hill, and on clear days the long ridge of Ko Lan sits on the horizon to the right. About Pattaya Beach Road

Pattaya sits on the eastern shore of the Gulf of Thailand in Chonburi Province, about 150 kilometers (93 miles) southeast of Bangkok. Its main beach runs for about 2.7 kilometers (1.7 miles) from North Pattaya to South Pattaya, and Beach Road follows the sand the whole way, with a palm-shaded promenade between the traffic and the sea. Because the camera stands at the northern end, it sees nearly the full length of the beach, from the hotel roofs just below the lens to South Pattaya, where Walking Street begins.

The town was a fishing village until the 1960s. Tourism took off during the Vietnam War, and one early group of American servicemen arrived from a base at Korat on 29 June 1959. In 1978 Pattaya became a specially governed city with its own administration, and the skyline in the frame, tower after tower from the Ferris wheel to the hill, grew up in the decades since.

The sand itself has had to be rebuilt. The beach was once about 35 meters (115 feet) wide, but erosion cut it to 2 or 3 meters (7 to 10 feet) in places, and in 2018 the city began a restoration that brought in sand from the island of Ko Rang Kwian with the aim of widening it to 50 meters (164 feet). From this height the beach reads as a broad pale strip between the palms and the water, edged with rows of umbrellas.

December to February is the dry stretch, with just 11.7 millimeters (0.5 inches) of rain in an average December and 16.3 millimeters (0.6 inches) in January, so these are the months most likely to bring clear skies over the bay. March and April turn hot and humid, and haze over the Gulf can soften the far end of the view.

The rains arrive in May and last into November, peaking in September and October at 213.6 millimeters (8.4 inches) and 224.5 millimeters (8.8 inches). That is when tall cloud builds over the water and squalls sweep across the bay, sometimes hiding the hill at the far end. Pattaya Bay faces west, so the sun sets over the Gulf rather than rising over it, and late in the day the light comes from the right of the frame, across the water.

Things to Do Near Pattaya Beach Road

The promenade below the camera is the obvious walk, 2.7 kilometers (1.7 miles) of palms and sand from North Pattaya to the start of Walking Street, the nightlife strip in South Pattaya. From Bali Hai Pier in South Pattaya, ferries leave for Ko Lan, an island about 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) long and 7 kilometers (4.3 miles) offshore. The ferry to Tawaen Beach takes about 40 to 45 minutes, and speedboats from Beach Road make the crossing in about 15.

Phra Tamnak Hill, the headland at the far end of the view, has the temple of Wat Phra Yai on its summit and small coves such as Cosy Beach along its shore, with Jomtien beyond it. Also in Pattaya, the Sanctuary of Truth is a temple-like hall built entirely of wood, with a central spire 105 meters (344 feet) tall. Work on it began in 1981 under the businessman Lek Viriyaphan, and the building is still unfinished.
