About this webcam
The Snow King Mountain Webcam looks across the rooftops of Jackson, Wyoming, to the ski runs of Snow King, the mountain that rises straight up from the southeast edge of town. The camera is mounted at Snake River Brewing and takes in the whole face of the hill: open runs cut between bands of conifers, lift lines climbing to the summit ridge and a tall mast near its right end. Timber-clad townhouses, power lines and a screen of aspens fill the foreground. The player carries three more cameras from the same operator, See Jackson Hole, all of them up on the mountain: at the top of the Summit Gondola, at mid-mountain and at the Cowboy Coaster.
About Snow King Mountain
Snow King has been Jackson’s ski hill for close to a century. Locals were hiking up it and skiing down informally in the 1920s, and in 1936 the Civilian Conservation Corps built a switchback horse and hiking trail to the top that became one of its first racecourses. The Jackson Hole Ski Club formed in 1937, and two years later a rope tow 1,220 meters (4,000 feet) long started lift-served skiing, making Snow King the first ski area in Wyoming. Its first chairlift, put in during 1946, was a converted ore tram from Colorado. Locals still call it the Town Hill, or simply the King.
The base sits at 1,901 meters (6,237 feet), the same elevation as the town, and the summit reaches 2,380 meters (7,808 feet), a vertical drop of 479 meters (1,571 feet). About 160 hectares (400 acres) are skiable, served by three chairlifts, a rope tow, three magic carpets and the Summit Gondola. The gondola was built by Leitner-Poma to replace the old Summit chairlift, and each of its cabins carries eight passengers.
The camera’s host has a history of its own. Snake River Brewing opened in 1994 in an old cinder block building on Millward Street that had been the base of a Coca-Cola distributor, and it was the first licensed brewpub in Wyoming. It has twice been named Small Brewery of the Year at the Great American Beer Festival. The tabs move the view up onto the mountain. Summit Gondola looks down past a lift tower and its cables onto the grid of Jackson, with the Teton Range along the horizon on clear days. Mid Mountain looks over the town from a grassy slope, with chairlift towers below and the timber-walled track of a summer ride beside the camera. Cowboy Coaster shows the ride’s landing platform, where the carts wait beside a small timber building.
Weather and Climate at Snow King Mountain
The base of the hill sits at the town’s own elevation, so Jackson’s 1991 to 2020 normals describe the bottom of the frame. January averages a high of minus 3 C (26 F) and a low of minus 14 C (6 F). April reaches 10 C (50 F) by day and drops to minus 3 C (26 F) at night, and July climbs to 26 C (79 F) but still falls to 5 C (41 F) before dawn. October averages 13 C (55 F) by day and minus 4 C (25 F) at night. The town gets about 200 centimeters (78 inches) of snow in an average year, out of 448 millimeters (17.6 inches) of total precipitation, and the summit, 479 meters (1,571 feet) higher, runs colder than the streets below.
The main camera follows the seasons on the slope itself. In summer the runs are usually green and the lift lines show as straight cuts through the forest. By early October the grass has gone brown, the aspens in the foreground have turned yellow and orange, and cloud can sit just above the ridge. Once the snow arrives the runs turn white against the dark conifers, which makes the Snow King Mountain Webcam a quick way to judge whether the hill has snow on it.
Things to Do Near Snow King Mountain
The Summit Gondola runs to the top, where Snow King points to views of the Teton Range, the National Elk Refuge and the town, and the Aurora Restaurant serves meals at the summit. The Snow King Observatory and Planetarium opened in 2024 with astronomy displays and live presentations. The Cowboy Coaster, an alpine coaster with 510 meters (1,660 feet) of track, has run since 2015, and a zipline 860 meters (2,820 feet) long opened in 2022. The alpine slide, a ropes course, miniature golf and a maze fill out the summer, and tubing takes over in winter.
The calendar goes beyond skiing. Snow King hosts Jackson Hole Ski Club races and the World Championship Snowmobile Hill Climb, and its King Concerts series brings nationally touring artists to the mountain. Back in town, Snake River Brewing pours its own beer in the brewpub that hosts the main camera, and the Town Square with its elk antler arches is a short walk from the lifts. Beyond the town, Grand Teton National Park fills the northwest of the valley.
