About this webcam
The R Lazy S Ranch Webcam looks out from the guest cabins of a historic dude ranch in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, across an open meadow to the Teton Range. Grass fills the lower part of the frame and a long wooden fence crosses the middle, with aspen and cottonwood stands behind it. Beyond the trees, dark timbered slopes climb to bare rock summits that often carry snow. The ranch calls this one of its favorite views in the world, and says the camera can catch owls hunting over the field, bull elk sparring and deer grazing. In summer, its daily trail rides head out from here toward Grand Teton National Park. A clock along the bottom edge of the stream shows the local date and time, so you can tell how fresh the picture is.
About R Lazy S Ranch
R Lazy S Ranch sits on Moose-Wilson Road, about 1 mile (1.6 kilometers) from Teton Village and roughly 20 minutes by car from the town of Jackson. Its 360 acres (146 hectares) of aspen groves, cottonwood stands and sagebrush flats lie at about 1,925 meters (6,316 feet) on the floor of the valley. The Snake River runs to the east and the Tetons rise to the west, and only a buckrail fence separates the property from Grand Teton National Park. Jackson Hole itself is 89 kilometers (55 miles) long and 10 to 21 kilometers (6 to 13 miles) wide.
The land has a longer record than the ranch that now occupies it. The Wyoming State Historic Preservation Office traces it to a Desert Land entry filed in 1908 and granted to Bennie Linn in 1912. Paul Colbron took over in 1936, built more cabins and named the place Aspen Ranch. The R Lazy S began elsewhere, and has hosted guests since 1948. Its dude operation moved to this site in 1972, bringing some of its buildings along, after a life lease ended on its original home inside what became Grand Teton National Park. The state describes it as the only dude ranch to start within those future park borders, relocate and still take guests today. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on July 2, 2026.
The Stirn family has run the ranch for three generations. In 1981, Howard and Cara Stirn gave the Jackson Hole Land Trust its first private conservation easement. Guests now stay in 14 log cabins, several of them more than 100 years old, around a century-old main lodge, and the herd numbers nearly 80 horses and a pair of donkeys.
Weather and Climate in Jackson Hole
Winters here are long and very cold. The 1991 to 2020 climate normals for the town of Jackson, which sits at a similar height of 1,901 meters (6,237 feet), put January between -14°C and -3°C (6°F and 26°F), with about 49 centimeters (19 inches) of snow that month. Snow typically buries the meadow on camera for much of the season, leaving the fence line and the dark timber as the main contrast. April is still cold, at -3°C to 10°C (26°F to 50°F), and the grass in the foreground can stay brown or patched with white well into spring.
Summer brings green grass and big daily temperature swings, because the height of the valley lets the heat escape quickly after sunset. July runs from 5°C to 26°C (41°F to 79°F), so a warm afternoon on camera can follow a cold start to the day. By October the range drops to -4°C to 12°C (25°F to 54°F). The meadow fades to tan, the trees lose their leaves, and the first snow often dusts the high ridges while the valley floor stays clear. The Tetons lie to the west, so the peaks tend to be best lit in the morning, with the sun moving behind them late in the day.
Things to Do Near R Lazy S Ranch
The ranch itself keeps to the traditional dude ranch model, with a week-long minimum stay and meals and a horse included in the rate. Guests can ride for an hour or all day, take an afternoon riding lesson, fish for trout, or book a scenic or whitewater float on the Snake River. A mile away, Teton Village, home to 517 people in 2020, surrounds the base of Jackson Hole Mountain Resort, which covers Rendezvous and Apres Vous Mountains and drops 1,262 meters (4,139 feet) from top to bottom. Its steep terrain includes the infamous Corbet’s Couloir. In the warmer months, the Jackson Hole Aerial Tram gives hikers access to trails in the national park.
Moose-Wilson Road continues north from the ranch toward Moose, part of a route of about 24 kilometers (15 miles) through the valley. The main stop is the Laurance S. Rockefeller Preserve, a 1,106-acre (448-hectare) refuge at the southern end of Phelps Lake on the former JY Ranch, another old dude ranch. Daily programs there include a hike to the lake, and its center opens in summer. The National Park Service warns of closures on the stretch between the preserve junction and Moose, so check its road page before setting out. The Grand Teton Visitor Center and Jackson Hole Airport are each about 30 minutes from the ranch, and Yellowstone National Park is a common side trip.
