About this webcam

The Stockholm Webcam sits high on the DN Tower in Marieberg, on the island of Kungsholmen, and looks east along Riddarfjarden toward the center of the Swedish capital. The lawns and trees of Ralambshovsparken fill the foreground, the apartment blocks of Norr Malarstrand line the left shore, and the red brick tower of City Hall rises where that shore runs out. Straight ahead, Riddarholmen can be glimpsed in the distance, while the arch of Vasterbron cuts across the bottom right corner. The wide water in between is the easternmost bay of Lake Malaren, with boats moored along the Sodermalm shore on the right. The scene shifts with the seasons: low winter sun and early dusk, long pale summer evenings, and the park trees turning yellow below the camera in October.

About Stockholm and the DN Tower

The camera’s perch is DN-skrapan, the Dagens Nyheter tower at Ralambsvagen 17. Designed by the architect Paul Hedqvist, it rises 84 meters (276 feet) over 26 floors. Work began on May 2, 1960, and the building was inaugurated on September 24, 1964. A rotating sign on its roof alternates between the names of two newspapers, Dagens Nyheter and Expressen. It is one of the MEDview cameras run by the media company Mediateknik, whose channel also streams views from Varberg, Falkenberg and Gothenburg.

Riddarfjarden is the last stretch of Lake Malaren before the city’s old town. Kungsholmen lines its north shore, with Norr Malarstrand running along the water to City Hall, about 2.2 kilometers (1.3 miles) east of the tower. Sodermalm and the small island of Langholmen form the south shore on the right of the picture. Beyond the end of the bay lies Stadsholmen, the island of Gamla Stan, and beside it Riddarholmen with the iron tower of Riddarholm Church, about 2.8 kilometers (1.7 miles) from the camera. Stockholm was established in 1252 on an island in this waterway between the lake and the Baltic Sea.

The bridge in the foreground is Vasterbron, inaugurated on November 20, 1935. It runs 602 meters (1,975 feet) from Kungsholmen to Sodermalm by way of Langholmen, its longest span reaches 204 meters (669 feet), and the deck sits 26 meters (85 feet) above the water. Pavements 2.5 meters (8.2 feet) wide run along both sides, and a widening in 1955 and 1956 made room for bicycle lanes.

Weather and Climate in Stockholm

Winters are cold and dark rather than severe. January averages a high of 1 C (34 F) and a low of -2.9 C (27 F) on the 1991 to 2020 figures. Around the December solstice the sun is up for only about six hours and climbs barely 7 degrees above the horizon at noon, so even midday light comes in low across the bay and leaves long shadows over the park. Spring warms slowly, and April highs are around 10 C (50 F) with nights close to freezing.

Summer brings the longest days of the year. July highs average 23.6 C (74 F) with lows of 14.8 C (59 F), and around the June solstice the sun stays up for about 18.5 hours, so the water is still lit late into the evening. Late summer tends to be the wettest part of the year. Autumn moves fast: October highs drop to around 10 C (50 F) and lows to about 5 C (41 F), and the foliage below the tower turns from green to yellow and orange within a few weeks.

Things to Do Near the DN Tower in Stockholm

Ralambshovsparken lies right below the tower, east of the bridge, with a children’s playground, sports facilities, a small marina and a restaurant with boules courts. A path called Smedsuddsvagen runs west beneath Vasterbron to Smedsuddsbadet, a sandy beach in a cove on the Smedsudden headland. Its shallow water and marked swimming area make it a favorite with families, and there is a cafe with showers and toilets. Kayaks and stand-up paddleboards can be rented on the east side of the headland.

For a lower version of the camera’s view, walk out onto Vasterbron, then carry on to the island of Langholmen or across to Sodermalm. Alternatively, follow Norr Malarstrand east along the water to City Hall, the red brick building with a bell tower at the far end of Kungsholmen. From there, Riddarholmen and the rest of Gamla Stan lie just across the water to the southeast.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is the Stockholm Webcam located?

It is mounted on the DN Tower (DN-skrapan) at Ralambsvagen 17 in Marieberg, on the western side of Kungsholmen in central Stockholm, Sweden. It faces east along Riddarfjarden, with City Hall about 2.2 kilometers (1.3 miles) away.

What can you see on the Stockholm Webcam?

Riddarfjarden, the easternmost bay of Lake Malaren, fills the middle of the frame. Ralambshovsparken is in the foreground, Norr Malarstrand runs along the left shore to the brick tower of City Hall, boats line the Sodermalm shore on the right, and Vasterbron crosses the bottom right corner.

Does this webcam show Gamla Stan or Stureplan?

Not up close. Riddarholmen, on the western edge of the old town, appears only in the distance about 2.8 kilometers (1.7 miles) ahead, and the streets and squares of Gamla Stan are not visible. Stureplan is in Ostermalm, on the far side of the city center, and cannot be picked out either.

Is there snow in Stockholm now?

The webcam is a quick way to check: look at the park lawns and rooftops in the foreground. Snow is most likely in the coldest months, from December through February, when daytime highs sit close to freezing. January averages a high of 1 C (34 F) and a low of -2.9 C (27 F).

What is the weather like in Stockholm by month?

Yes. The stream runs around the clock, so the player stays live after dark, when the picture depends on the city’s street and building lights. In midwinter that starts early, because around the December solstice the sun sets before 3 pm local time.

What is Vasterbron in Stockholm?

Vasterbron is the arch bridge in the bottom right of the view. Opened in 1935, it carries traffic, pedestrians and cyclists 602 meters (1,975 feet) from Kungsholmen to Sodermalm by way of Langholmen.

Is there a beach near the DN Tower in Stockholm?

Yes. Smedsuddsbadet, a sandy beach in a cove on the Smedsudden headland, is a short walk from the tower along the Smedsuddsvagen path beneath Vasterbron. The beach itself is outside the camera’s view, which faces the other way.
