Falkenberg Webcam – Skrea Strand Beach, Dunes and Pier

The Falkenberg Webcam looks along Skrea Strand, the long sandy beach on the south side of Falkenberg on Sweden’s west coast. From a raised spot at the northern end of the beach, the camera follows the curve of the shoreline southeast toward a cluster of white hotel buildings, the grassy dunes behind them and the 250 meter (820 foot) bathing pier that runs out into the Kattegat. Open water fills the right half of the frame. The scene shifts with the seasons. In summer the sand and the pier typically fill with swimmers, while autumn and winter can leave the beach to a few walkers, seabirds on the water and long bands of cloud moving in off the sea.

About Skrea Strand and Falkenberg

Falkenberg sits at the mouth of the Atran river in Halland County, about 45 kilometers (28 miles) northwest of Halmstad and 105 kilometers (65 miles) south of Gothenburg. The town received its market rights in 1558, but its history goes back further: a Danish king built a fort by the river in the early 13th century, and it was destroyed in 1434. In the 20th century Falkenberg built a reputation as a seaside resort, and Skrea Strand is the main reason.

The beach runs for about 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) and is backed by tall dunes. Marram grass was planted on them in 1913 to stop the sand from drifting, and a year later only about ten bathing huts stood on the shore. A children’s beach colony followed in 1917, the number of huts had grown to around 300 by 1928, a bathhouse opened in 1932, and in 1943 Skrea Strand became part of the town of Falkenberg. The area now holds about 1,600 bathing huts.

Two hotels stand directly on the beach, Falkenberg Strandbad and Ocean Hotel. Strandbaden’s first building was finished in 1937 on the same site the hotel occupies today. The 250 meter (820 foot) pier has an access ramp, and the Klitterbadet indoor pool, opened in 1969, is close to the sand.

Weather and Climate in Falkenberg

Averages for the beach from 2015 to 2024 put January and February highs at about 3 to 4 C (38 to 39 F), with nights hovering around 0 C (32 F), and December only a little warmer at about 5 C (41 F). Spring warms slowly. Highs reach about 10 C (50 F) in April and 16 C (61 F) in May. July and August are the warmest months, with highs near 20 C (68 F) and nights around 14 C (57 F).

Autumn stays mild for a while, with September highs around 17 C (63 F) and October around 12 C (54 F), but it is also the wettest part of the year. From July to October each month averages roughly 110 to 130 millimeters (4.3 to 5.1 inches) of rain, against about 50 millimeters (2 inches) in April. Daylight swings widely at this latitude. Around the winter solstice the sun is up for under 7 hours, so the beach is lit only from late morning to mid-afternoon, while around midsummer there are close to 18 hours of daylight and the view stays bright late into the evening.

Things to Do Near Falkenberg

Skrea Strand is the obvious place to start, with the pier, beach volleyball, mini golf and an outdoor gym near the sand, plus kiosks and restaurants in summer. In town, the Strandpromenaden walking and cycling path follows the Atran for more than 2 kilometers (1.2 miles), and the river is crossed by Tullbron, a stone arch bridge built between 1756 and 1761 and listed as a protected building in 1984. Salmon fishing on the Atran spread the town’s name far beyond Halland, and millions of salmon have swum under that bridge over the centuries.

The coast on either side of town has more beaches, among them Olofsbo, Ugglarp with its three separate beaches, and the very shallow Langasand. At Glommen, about 8 kilometers (5 miles) west-northwest of the center, the lighthouse at Morups Tange dates from 1841 and stands 27 meters (89 feet) tall, and about 280 bird species have been spotted on the headland. The Kattegattleden cycle route passes through Falkenberg on its 390 kilometer (242 mile) run from Gothenburg to Helsingborg. The Gekas department store in Ullared, which belongs to the same municipality, lies about 29 kilometers (18 miles) northeast of town in a straight line.
