About this webcam
The Washington Iowa Webcam looks out from under the canopy of the railroad depot in Washington, Iowa, the county seat of Washington County in the southeast of the state, a few blocks north of downtown. A brick platform and a strip of lawn fill the foreground, and the main track crosses the whole picture on its gravel bed. The North Iowa Avenue grade crossing sits at the right edge with its warning signals, and the street runs away past big metal-sided sheds. Beyond the rails are a low gray building with a garage door, an open grassy lot and brick blocks on the skyline. Steel Highway runs the camera, which covers local trains and road freights on the Ottumwa Subdivision, a Canadian Pacific main line that has been part of CPKC since 2023.
About Washington, Iowa
Washington was founded in 1839 as the seat of the newly created Washington County, and the 2020 census counted 7,352 residents. The town stands 231 meters (758 feet) above sea level in the farm country of southeast Iowa, about 42 kilometers (26 miles) south of Iowa City in a straight line, and it is counted as part of the Iowa City metropolitan area. It calls itself the City of Flowers and Trees.
Railroads shaped the town early. The Rock Island took over the Mississippi and Missouri line in 1869, built a branch west from Washington that reached Sigourney by 1872, and built a switch yard, coal chute, roundhouse, turntable and stock yards here. The line on this camera came with the Milwaukee Road, and the depot the camera hangs from is the former Milwaukee Road passenger station beside North Iowa Avenue. The Soo Line, controlled by Canadian Pacific, bought the Milwaukee Road in the 1980s. CP sold this route to I&M Rail Link in 1997, it later passed to the Iowa, Chicago and Eastern, and Canadian Pacific bought it back in 2008. Since the 2023 merger with Kansas City Southern it has been part of CPKC, which runs the Ottumwa Subdivision between Davenport and Ottumwa.
The camera is hosted by the Railroad Depot Hotel in Washington. Steel Highway lists the traffic as locals, which switch customers along the line, and road freights running the length of the subdivision, and it monitors railroad radio on AAR channel 44 (160.770 MHz). A banner across the top of the stream shows the local time, date and temperature.
