About this webcam

The West Liberty Webcam is mounted on the former Rock Island depot in West Liberty, Iowa, and looks west along the Iowa Interstate Railroad’s Iowa City Subdivision. A single track on pale gravel ballast runs away from the camera toward the horizon, with a line of trees and brush on the left and a wide mowed lawn on the right, where a wooden gazebo stands. A corner of the depot’s red roof and a black railing sit in the lower right. Westbound trains pass close to the lens and shrink toward Iowa City, while eastbound trains grow out of the distance on their way to Illinois. Steel Highway Railcams runs the stream, and the West Liberty Heritage Foundation hosts the camera at its depot museum. The banner across the top shows the local time, the temperature and the line’s milepost, 221.4.

About West Liberty

West Liberty is a town of 3,858 people (2020 census) in Muscatine County, about 8 kilometers (5 miles) south of Interstate 80, at an elevation of 210 meters (689 feet). The town was incorporated in 1868 at the junction of the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific and the Burlington, Cedar Rapids and Northern, and the settlement moved to be closer to the tracks. In 2010 it became the first town in Iowa with a Hispanic majority, at 52.2 percent of residents, a share that reached 58.3 percent in 2020. West Liberty Foods, a turkey processor, keeps its headquarters and a plant in town.

The depot the camera sits on was built in 1897 from Van Meter buff brick after fire destroyed the earlier wooden station. It measures about 30 by 6 meters (100 by 20 feet) and held a ticket and telegraph office, two waiting rooms, an express room and a baggage room. Because the Rock Island and the Burlington, Cedar Rapids and Northern shared it, it was known as the Union Depot. Passenger trains stopped calling around 1970 and the building fell into disrepair, until the West Liberty Heritage Foundation, formed in 1999, acquired it along with the old railroad maintenance yard. Restoration began in 2000 with an Iowa Department of Transportation grant and local gifts, the depot was rededicated in August 2001, and it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on August 9, 2022.

The Iowa Interstate Railroad took over the former Rock Island tracks between Chicago and Omaha on November 2, 1984, and now runs about 933 kilometers (580 miles) of line across Illinois, Iowa and Nebraska from its headquarters in Cedar Rapids. Its Iowa City Subdivision, the track in front of the camera, runs from South Amana in Iowa to Silvis, Illinois. It also owns two Chinese-built 2-10-2 steam locomotives, 6988 and 7081, used for excursions but out of service awaiting overhaul as of 2022.

Downtown keeps a 1910 movie theater and a 1904 public library, and every July the Muscatine County Fair, the town’s biggest event, fills the county fairgrounds in West Liberty.
