About this webcam

The Avigliano Webcam looks across the hillside heart of Avigliano, a town of about 10,270 people in the province of Potenza, in the southern Italian region of Basilicata. Houses in pink, ochre, cream and white plaster climb a steep slope in tight rows, their terracotta roofs stepping up to a wooded crest topped by a tall pine. In the lower left, a small square with a pedestrian crossing and a line of parked cars fills and empties through the day, with delivery vans pulling in and small groups of people gathering under the street lamps. The town sits at 827 meters (2,713 feet), high enough for low cloud to hide the top of the hill on grey autumn days and for snow to whiten the roofs in a cold winter.

About Avigliano

Avigliano covers 85.48 square kilometers (33 square miles) of hill country about 13 kilometers (8 miles) northwest of Potenza, the regional capital, measured in a straight line. The municipal territory runs from about 550 meters (1,804 feet) up to the summit of Monte Caruso at 1,239 meters (4,065 feet), with Monte Carmine close behind at 1,228 meters (4,029 feet). Its outlying hamlets include Castel Lagopesole, Possidente and Sant’Angelo. In 1951, thirty of the northern hamlets broke away to form the separate town of Filiano.

The first document to name the town is dated 13 November 1127, under Norman rule. Avigliano backed the Neapolitan Republic in 1799, when the local priest Nicola Palomba was among its leaders, and in 1861 its residents drove off the brigand band of Carmine Crocco. The jurist and politician Emanuele Gianturco (1857 to 1907) was born here, and a monument to him from 1926 stands in the main square. So was Leonard Covello (1887 to 1982), who left for the United States and became an American educator.

The town has a long craft tradition in woodwork, wicker and rug weaving, and its best known product is the balestra, a folding knife that opens with three distinct clicks. Avigliano Citta station links the town to Potenza on the suburban railway, part of the old line toward Altamura.

Weather and Climate in Avigliano

Avigliano has a cool hill climate, with an average annual temperature of about 12°C (54°F). January is the coldest month, with typical highs around 7°C (45°F) and lows close to 0°C (32°F), and snow is most likely between December and March. In winter the camera can show snow lying on the terracotta roofs and on the wooded crest, while grey days bring cloud low enough to swallow the top of the hill. Spring warms slowly, from highs of about 11°C (52°F) in March to 19°C (66°F) in May.

Summer is warm rather than hot at this height, with July and August highs around 28°C (82°F) and nights cooling to about 16°C (61°F). On the camera, summer means green trees on the crest and the pastel fronts at their brightest. Autumn brings the most changeable pictures: October still reaches about 18°C (64°F), but by November highs drop to around 13°C (55°F) with lows near 5°C (41°F), and mist and low cloud can settle over the ridge.

Things to Do Near Avigliano

Castel Lagopesole stands on its own hill at about 825 meters (2,707 feet), 8.5 kilometers (5.3 miles) north of the town in a straight line. The fortress was first documented in 1129, and most of what survives comes from works ordered by Emperor Frederick II and his son Manfred in the 13th century. Its rectangular curtain wall measures about 57 by 93 meters (187 by 305 feet), carries seven square towers and encloses two courtyards of very different sizes, the smaller one built around a central keep. Charles I of Anjou stayed there in 1268 and 1294, and on 7 April 1861 Carmine Crocco occupied it with about 400 brigands. Parts of the castle reopened to visitors in August 2024 on a few days a week, so check the opening days before driving out.

Back in town, the Basilica of Santa Maria del Carmine is the starting point of the year’s biggest event. Every 16 July the statue of the Madonna del Carmine is carried in procession about 8 kilometers (5 miles) up to the sanctuary on top of Monte Carmine, led by the votive offerings known as cinti, and it comes back down to town on the second Sunday of September. The devotion is traced to the 17th century, and after the earthquake of 1694 the town built a votive chapel to the Madonna. On the first Sunday of August the town stages its quadri plastici, living tableaux, and the feast of the patron saint, San Vito, falls on 15 June. For food, look for strazzata, a ring-shaped focaccia flavored with pepper, and baccala aviglianese, salt cod served with peperoni cruschi. Potenza is a short drive to the southeast.
