About this webcam
The Bodo Golfpark Webcam looks across Bodo Golfpark, the 18-hole course of Salten Golf Club at Myklebostad, on the coast about 10 kilometers (6 miles) northeast of Bodo town center in Nordland. A wooden deck and railing sit in the foreground, and a long run of mown grass leads away from the camera between tall conifers on the right and bare broadleaf woods on the left, with white marker poles standing in the turf. A forested mountain ridge closes the view. The picture follows the Arctic year closely. In June and early July the sun does not set here and golfers can play through the night, while midwinter brings only short, low light, and passing showers can leave drops on the lens.
About Bodo Golfpark
Salten Golf Club (Salten Golfklubb) was founded in 1992, when a group of golfers from Bodo joined forces with an existing club in Valnesfjord and renamed it. In 1993 the club leased part of the Ronvik fields in town for a driving range, and in August 1998 it opened a six-hole course at Saltstraumen. Bodo municipality turned down plans for an 18-hole course at Saltstraumen in 2003, and a small group from the club then reached an agreement with the landowners at Myklebostad, where Bodo Golfpark stands today. The club owns the course and calls itself the largest golf club in Northern Norway.
The course has 18 holes and a par of 71, plus a short-game practice area, a putting green and a driving range. The club describes it as a combined links and forest course. The front nine runs through old farmland along the shore, with views toward the sea, the island of Landegode and the Lofoten Wall, the line of Lofoten peaks across the water. From the yellow tees, holes run from 105 meters (344 feet) on the par-3 6th to 500 meters (1,640 feet) on the par-5 16th. This camera looks toward the wooded, mountain side of the course rather than the shore, so the sea is not in shot. The stream is published on the NK-Nett YouTube channel, the club links it from the Webcam entry on its own website, and the current broadcast has been running since July 2021.
The land itself has a long past. According to the club’s history, the oldest traces of people at Myklebostad are 2,700 years old, and the name comes from Old Norse for “the big farm”, written as Myklabostad in an archbishop’s land register of 1450. The ground around hole 4 was once an islet called Stonga, used as a burial site, where no fewer than six grave mounds have been identified and a burial cairn is still clearly visible. The bay and beach behind the 6th tee is called Jektstoa, after the jekts, the cargo boats that carried dried fish from Northern Norway south to Bergen for centuries.
Weather and Climate at Bodo Golfpark
Bodo lies north of the Arctic Circle, at 67 degrees north, yet its winters are mild for that latitude. At Bodo Airport, about 11 kilometers (7 miles) southwest of the course, the daily mean is -0.5 C (31 F) in January, 3.4 C (38 F) in April, 13.6 C (56 F) in July and 5.6 C (42 F) in October. Precipitation adds up to about 1,117 millimeters (44 inches) a year, and low cloud can hide the ridge at the end of the fairway.
Light is the bigger story here. The midnight sun is visible in Bodo from early June to mid-July, and golfers can play around the clock in summer. There is no true polar night in Bodo because of atmospheric refraction, but mountains south of the town keep the sun out of sight in parts of the municipality from early December to early January, so the Bodo Golfpark Webcam shows a dark or dim picture for much of the day around midwinter. Snow can cover the fairways in the colder months, and by early October the broadleaf trees beside the course have already dropped most of their leaves.
Things to Do Near Bodo Golfpark
The course lies off Midnattssolveien north of Bodo, and the cycle route that Visit Bodo suggests to Kjerringoy follows this northern shore past a string of beaches, among them Lopsstranda, Ausvika, Geitvagen and Buholmen, before a ferry from Festvag crosses to Misten. Kjerringoy Trading Post, about 40 kilometers (25 miles) north of Bodo, had its heyday in the 19th century, appears in several films based on the novels of Knut Hamsun and counts among the most important architectural monuments in Norway.
In Bodo itself, the Jektefartsmuseet displays the Anna Karoline, which the club describes as the only original jekt left in the world. Southeast of Bodo, the tidal current at Saltstraumen forces up to 400 million cubic meters (about 110 billion US gallons) of seawater through a strait 3 kilometers (1.9 miles) long and 150 meters (490 feet) wide every six hours, and the Saltstraumen Bridge on County Road 17 crosses it.
