About this webcam
The Gala Webcam looks out over Gala, a mountain village and ski resort in Sor-Fron municipality in Norway’s Gudbrandsdalen valley, from a hillside high above the lake Galavatnet. Past a turf roof in the foreground, the main camera faces a forested fell where ski runs and a long lift line climb to a bare summit, with open fields and farm buildings on the lower slopes and the gray water of Galavatnet along the bottom right of the frame. Four more cameras from the same YouTube channel sit in the tabs: a lakeside view, turf-roofed log cabins above a car park, a village road and a large white hotel on the hillside. In early October the runs are bare grass and the fell top is brown heath. The resort plans its regular ski season from December 19, 2026, when this view should turn white.
About Gala
Gala sits at about 930 meters (3,051 feet) on the eastern shore of Galavatnet, on the plateau west of Hundorp in Gudbrandsdalen. Hundorp is about 12 kilometers (7.5 miles) away. The resort describes it as roughly halfway between Oslo and Trondheim and an hour north of Lillehammer. Beside a large number of cabins and holiday homes it has two mountain hotels, Gala Hogfjellshotell and Wadahl Hogfjellshotell, and Store norske leksikon notes views from Gala toward Jotunheimen, Rondane and Ringebufjella.
The ski area, Gala Alpin, spans 770 to 1,120 meters (2,526 to 3,675 feet). Valsfjell is its highest section, topping out at 1,120 meters, with a 1,600 meter (1 mile) lift, a vertical drop of 340 meters (1,115 feet) and four runs graded from green to black. Blabaerfjell, home to the children’s area, reaches 1,004 meters (3,294 feet) and has six runs: one green, three blue and two red. The long lift line climbing straight to the top of the fell in the main view is most likely the Valsfjell lift, the longest in the resort.
All five cameras on the Gala Webcam stream from the Per Nord YouTube channel. The Galavatnet tab, labeled Galavann on screen, follows a gravel road past a traditional slanted wooden fence and a red cabin with a turf roof, with the lake and distant mountains beyond. The cabins and valley tab, labeled Utsikt (Norwegian for view), looks over a paved car park and a row of turf-roofed log cabins to the lake and the ski fell beyond. The village road tab, labeled Gala Handel, has a weather station mast in the foreground and chalets along the road, and the mountain hotel tab watches a large white hotel with dark wooden annexes, the same building that shows in the distance on the village road camera.
Weather and Climate in Gala
At this height winters are long and cold. Averages for the past ten years put January highs near -6 C (21 F) and lows near -11 C (12 F), with December and February only slightly milder. In winter the Gala Webcam usually looks over a frozen, snow-covered lake to white runs. Spring comes late: April highs average about 3 C (37 F), and May reaches about 9 C (48 F) as the snow retreats up the fell.
Summer is short, mild and the wettest time of year. July highs average about 16 C (61 F) with lows near 8 C (46 F), and July rainfall averages around 130 millimeters (5.1 inches), so low cloud and fog can hide the fell for hours. Autumn turns the low trees and heath gold and brown, as the cameras showed in early October. October highs average about 4 C (39 F) with lows just below freezing, and November highs fall to about -2 C (28 F).
Things to Do Near Gala
In winter, Gala Alpin runs Valsfjell for the longest descents and Blabaerfjell for families, with evening skiing in Blabaerfjell on Wednesdays and Fridays from 5:30 to 8:30 pm from the first week of January. Beginners start at Knerten, a short floodlit lift beside a moving carpet in the lower part of Blabaerfjell. The ski center has a ski school, rentals and a cafe, and its Peer Sauna can be booked all winter. Cross-country skiers set off on a trail network of about 230 kilometers (143 miles), by Gala Hogfjellshotell’s count.
Summer belongs to Peer Gynt. The Peer Gynt Road, a mountain road between Ostre Gausdal and Vinstra that runs through Gala, is open only in the summer months. Every August since 1967 the village has hosted the Peer Gynt festival, and since 1989 it has staged Henrik Ibsen’s Peer Gynt as an open-air play beside Galavatnet. Gala Alpin’s summer program adds a treetop climbing park with ziplines, rental bikes, canoes, kayaks and paddleboards for Galavatnet, disc golf, and guided moose and canoe safaris. A swim in the lake followed by the Peer Sauna is a summer favorite with guests.
