Kongens Plass Webcam – Kristiansund’s Rebuilt Town Square

The Kongens Plass Webcam looks out from the square at the top of Kaibakken, the main street of Kristiansund, and follows it downhill to a strip of harbor water and the hills on the far shore. Two large street trees frame the shot. A red-brick building lines the left side of the street and a pale green corner building the right, while the paved square and its planting beds fill the left foreground. Cars and people on foot cross the picture all day. The open end of the street also shows the weather on Norway’s west coast: low winter light, rain clouds over the hills, and June nights that never get fully dark. About Kongens Plass

Kongens plass, King’s Square, sits where Kaibakken meets Langveien in the center of Kirkelandet. That is one of the four main islands Kristiansund is built on, along with Nordlandet, Innlandet and Frei, the largest. The municipality had 24,404 residents in 2023. From the square, Kaibakken runs about 270 meters (886 feet) down to Piren, the pier where the Sundbaten harbor boat ties up, and that is the water at the end of the street on the camera.

The street is younger than it looks. German air raids between April 28 and May 1, 1940 destroyed around 800 buildings in Kristiansund and killed six people, and this part of Kirkelandet was leveled. The old town hall stood close to where the square is now, at today’s address Kongens plass 1, and was lost with the rest. Architect and professor Sverre Pedersen drew a plan for the burned area in 1941 with Kaibakken as its main axis, and it was built after the war with some changes. That plan explains the straight, wide line the camera looks down.

The new town hall went up on the street itself, at Kaibakken 2. Per and Molle Cappelen designed it in reinforced concrete, and it opened on January 31, 1953. At the top of Kaibakken, the Normoria culture house opened in 2025. The town got both its name and its status as a market town from King Christian VI in 1742, with the ending sund for the straits between the islands.

Weather and Climate in Kristiansund

Kristiansund has a mild, wet coastal climate for a town this far north. At the airport, the 1991 to 2020 averages put January at 2.1 C (36 F), with highs near 4 C (39 F) and nights around freezing. April averages 5.6 C (42 F). July is the warmest month at 14.3 C (58 F), with afternoons close to 18 C (64 F), and October drops back to 7.2 C (45 F). About 1,022 millimeters (40 inches) of rain and snow falls in a typical year, so wet pavement on Kaibakken and low cloud over the far hills are common sights on this camera.

Latitude shapes the view as much as temperature. Kristiansund lies at about 63 degrees north, so at the December solstice the noon sun climbs only about 3.5 degrees above the horizon and the streetlights along Kaibakken stay on for much of the day. The two trees in front of the lens stand bare all winter, and the camera has shown them hung with strings of lights. From late May to late July the sun never sinks far enough below the horizon for the sky to go fully dark, and the square stays in twilight right through the night.

Things to Do Near Kongens Plass

Walk down Kaibakken and you reach Piren, where the Sundbaten harbor boat island-hops between the town’s islands on a round trip of about 20 minutes. Across the harbor lies Innlandet, the old part of town that came through the 1940 raids with the least damage. Its narrow lanes are lined with old wooden houses, and there is a Second World War monument there too. On the pier, the Klippfish Woman sculpture is a nod to the salted and dried cod trade. Festiviteten, finished in 1914 in the Art Nouveau style, is the oldest opera house in Norway and hosts the Opera Weeks every February.

The Norwegian Klippfish Museum, in an old klippfish wharf on Gomalandet, is about a 10-minute stroll from the center, and Mellemvaerftet nearby shows veteran ships and wooden boats under repair. Kirkelandet Church, completed in 1964 and set with 320 pieces of colored glass, is about a 15-minute walk from the town center. Further out, the Kringsja park area has Havstien, a marked hiking trail of 3 kilometers (1.9 miles), and the Varden view tower gives a 360 degree panorama along the fjords toward the Trollheimen and Dovre mountains. Grip, a tiny fishing village on islets about 14 kilometers (9 miles) offshore, is reached by boat.
