About this webcam

The Hedgehog Webcam looks inside a feeding box for wild hedgehogs and small mammals at Merindades Natura, an environmental education center in Medina de Pomar, in the Las Merindades district of northern Burgos, Spain. A large glass panel runs down the left of the frame, a dish of food sits against the back wall, and the floor is laid with flat stone slabs beside a wall faced with bark and moss. Animals come in through a small tunnel built to keep cats out. By day the box is often quiet apart from voles and wood mice darting in for sunflower seeds. The main event starts at dusk, when hedgehogs arrive and return several times through the night, moving with the hesitant, stop-and-sniff walk the species is known for.

About the Hedgehog Webcam

Merindades Natura is run by Alojamientos Merindades Amazul, a rural holiday lodging business in Medina de Pomar, and streams its cameras through Directo Natura, a Spanish project that broadcasts live feeders, ponds and nest boxes from around the country. This camera, number 67 in the Directo Natura network, has been streaming since May 13, 2026. The operator lists the menu as cat food, boiled egg, insects, snails, fruit, seeds, wheat, sunflower seeds and nuts. Hedgehogs work through most of it, while common voles and wood mice turn up at any hour for the sunflower seeds and carry them off. After eating, many of the visitors head for a small spring at the edge of the garden pond on the same property.

That pond has cameras of its own. Camera 10, streamed in 4K, watches a stone-paved feeding area beside it, where great tits, robins, house sparrows and blackbirds are among the regulars and roe deer and foxes sometimes appear through the fence. Camera 65 sits low over a weedy pool edged with stones, watched for frogs, toads and newts. Both are on the Merindades Bird Feeder Webcam page.

The European hedgehog ranges from Iberia and Italy north into Scandinavia. Adults grow to around 26 centimeters (10 inches) long, can top 1.1 kilograms (2.4 pounds) and carry up to 6,000 spines. In the wild they live mainly on earthworms, slugs, snails and beetles, with plant matter only a small part of the diet.

Medina de Pomar sits at 583 meters (1,913 feet) by the Nela and Trueba rivers, 77 kilometers (48 miles) from Bilbao, and had 6,190 residents at the start of 2025. Its Alcazar de los Condestables, two square towers joined by a lower central block, was commissioned by Pedro Fernandez de Velasco around 1370. The old town was declared a historic-artistic ensemble in 1973.

Weather and Climate in Medina de Pomar

Winters are chilly and damp. Based on Open-Meteo data for 2016 to 2025, January highs average about 9 C (48 F), nights hover near 1 C (34 F), and around 13 January nights a year drop below freezing. November is the wettest month, with about 90 millimeters (3.5 inches) of rain. The feeding box keeps the weather off the camera, but European hedgehogs may hibernate through the colder months, waking now and then to move their nests, so winter nights on this camera can belong mostly to the voles and mice.

Spring warms slowly, with April highs near 15 C (59 F) and lows around 5 C (41 F). Hedgehog pregnancies peak between May and July, and litters are typically four to six young. July and August are the warmest and driest months, with highs of 25 to 26 C (77 to 79 F), nights of 13 to 14 C (55 to 57 F) and only about 26 to 29 millimeters (around 1 inch) of rain each. October still reaches about 19 C (66 F) by day and 9 C (48 F) at night, and the short summer nights give way to long autumn evenings with more dark hours for hedgehog visits.

In town, the Alcazar has housed the Museo Historico de las Merindades, the district’s history museum, since November 2001. Further out, Frias is a small medieval town of stone, adobe and timber houses, with a 12th-century bridge that gained a fortified tower in the 14th century. Frequently Asked Questions

Where is the Hedgehog Webcam located?

The camera is at Merindades Natura in Medina de Pomar, a town of about 6,200 people in the Las Merindades district of Burgos province, Castile and Leon, northern Spain. Bilbao is 77 kilometers (48 miles) away and the city of Burgos about 80 kilometers (50 miles).

What can you see on the Hedgehog Webcam?

The inside of a glass-fronted feeding box, with a food dish, a stone slab floor and a bark-lined wall. Hedgehogs visit from dusk and through the night, and common voles and wood mice slip in at any hour for sunflower seeds.

What time do hedgehogs come to the feeder?

From dusk onward. The operator says hedgehogs start arriving as evening falls and make several visits during the night, so the hours after sunset in Spain, on Central European Time, are the best time to watch.

Why are there no hedgehogs on the webcam right now?

Hedgehogs are largely nocturnal, so during the day the box is usually empty or visited only by voles and mice. In the colder months European hedgehogs may also hibernate, which can mean quieter nights at the feeder in winter.

What food is in the hedgehog feeder?

Merindades Natura stocks it with cat food, boiled egg, insects, snails, fruit, seeds, wheat, sunflower seeds and nuts.

Is the hedgehog feeder cat proof?

Yes, that is the idea. Animals reach the food through a small tunnel that the operator designed to keep cats away, so hedgehogs have a safe place to eat.

What is the weather like in Medina de Pomar?

Cool and fairly wet. January averages highs of about 9 C (48 F) with regular frost at night, while July and August reach 25 to 26 C (77 to 79 F) and are the driest months of the year.
