The Kuopio Market Webcam looks west across Kuopio’s market square, the big open plaza at the center of this lakeside city in eastern Finland. Market stalls, one under a red and white striped awning and others decked out in greenery, stand on the paving in the foreground. The long front of the Kuopion Sokos department store runs along the far side, and the 1886 City Hall fills the right of the frame with its clock tower. On clear days the slim Puijo tower shows on the wooded skyline behind the City Hall roof. The camera is fixed, so the changes come from the people, the stalls and the weather: shoppers crossing the square at midday, buses stopping on the street in front of the City Hall, snow in winter and long, light evenings in June.
Kuopion tori, as locals call the market square, measures 130 by 174 meters (427 by 571 feet) and is framed by four streets: Tulliportinkatu to the north, Puijonkatu to the east, Kauppakatu to the south and Haapaniemenkatu to the west. Kuopio was officially founded on November 17, 1775, the year its first town plan was ordered. The market moved to its present site in 1818 and became the official market square in 1856. Today the city has 126,572 residents (2025), and Lake Kallavesi almost completely surrounds it.
The City Hall on the right of the picture has held the northern edge of the square since it was completed in 1886. Architects F. A. Sjostrom and Josef Stenback designed it in the Neo-Renaissance style of the late 19th century, and its brick-red facade and central clock tower are the easiest landmark to pick out on the stream. Across the square to the west stand the Carlson and Kuopion Sokos department stores, with the Sokos sign and its large video screen near the left of the frame. The camera looks out from the east side, home to the Sektori and Vihtorski shopping centers.
A good deal of the square sits underground. A car park opened beneath it in 1991 with 700 spaces, and a renovation completed in 2013 added about 650 more, bringing the total to roughly 1,350. Up on the paving, kiosks and small service buildings stand among the stalls, like the flat-roofed block in the lower right of the frame. The 1902 Market Hall also stands on the square itself. The tower on the horizon is Puijo tower, completed in 1963 to a design by architect Seppo Ruotsalainen. It is 75 meters (246 feet) tall and stands on top of Puijo hill, so its top rises 224 meters (735 feet) above the water level of Kallavesi and 306 meters (1,004 feet) above sea level.
Kuopio has long, cold winters and short, mild summers. At Kuopio Airport in neighboring Siilinjarvi, the 1991 to 2020 averages put January highs at -5.2°C (22.6°F) and lows at -11.2°C (11.8°F), with February nights slightly colder at -11.8°C (10.8°F). Average highs stay below freezing from December through March, so winter frames often show the paving under snow. In December the sun sets in mid-afternoon.
Spring comes late. April highs average 6.7°C (44.1°F) and May reaches 14.2°C (57.6°F). July is the warmest month, with average highs of 21.8°C (71.2°F) and lows of 13.7°C (56.7°F), and June is close behind at 19.1°C (66.4°F). Kuopio lies south of the Arctic Circle, so there is no midnight sun, but around midsummer the sky over the square stays light late into the evening. Autumn cools quickly: September highs average 13.5°C (56.3°F), October 6.3°C (43.3°F) and November just 0.8°C (33.4°F). By mid October the trees behind the square have turned yellow.
Start on the square. The Kuopio Market Hall began trading in August 1902, designed by Johan Victor Stromberg in the Art Nouveau style, and a fish market section was added in a 1914 expansion. About 30 businesses sell inside, and the hall is known for meat, handmade crafts and kalakukko, the traditional fish pie. Kuopio Cathedral, a stone Neoclassical Lutheran church built between 1806 and 1815, is the seat of the Diocese of Kuopio, with a bust of J. V. Snellman in the square in front of it. The Kuopio Museum, completed in 1907 on the edge of Snellman Park, was inspired by Finnish castles such as St. Olaf’s Castle and Vyborg Castle, and it is the third oldest purpose-built museum building in Finland.
For the lake, head to the Vainolanniemi peninsula, nicknamed Vanari, which Kallavesi surrounds on the water side. It has beaches, sports fields and parks, and the same district holds the J. V. Snellman Home Museum, Kanttila (the home of writer Minna Canth), the Old Kuopio Museum and St. Nicholas Cathedral. Puijo tower, the landmark on the stream’s skyline, has an observation deck at the top, a cafe on its third floor and a top-floor restaurant looking out over the city and Kallavesi.
