About this webcam
The Warrior Canine Connection Webcam looks into the puppy playroom at the Healing Quarters of Warrior Canine Connection in Boyds, Maryland, where golden and Labrador retriever puppies grow up to become service dogs for military veterans. The main Full House camera looks down on a pen of white fence panels with round camouflage-pattern fleece beds and plush toys scattered across the floor, and puppies often nap in those beds. A second tab carries the Puppy Playroom camera, where puppies clamber over a low step stool on a tiled floor. According to the operator, staff, volunteers, U.S. service members and their families all help socialize the puppies here. Both feeds depend on the litters: the Full House camera goes live only when more than one litter is in the playroom, and between litters the stream can show recorded highlights instead. The live puppies come back with the next litter on their own.
About Warrior Canine Connection
Warrior Canine Connection is a Maryland nonprofit that engages veterans in a therapeutic mission: training skilled service dogs for fellow veterans. It calls the approach Mission Based Trauma Recovery, and it is an accredited member of Assistance Dogs International. Its national headquarters, the Healing Quarters, covers about 32 hectares (80 acres) beside Seneca Creek State Park and includes a dedicated space for whelping and puppy care, the Puppy Enrichment Center. The site sits roughly 119 meters (390 feet) above sea level.
The playroom is one stop in a long program. Puppies spend their first few weeks with their mother in the whelping room, then come out into the playroom from about 4 weeks old. They gain about 0.9 kilograms (2 pounds) for every week of age, so a one-month-old puppy weighs about 3.6 kilograms (8 pounds). At ten weeks each puppy moves in with a family that trains with positive reinforcement, and over a two-year training period it learns 80 commands. Veterans are involved at every stage, from socializing young puppies to teaching the finished commands. In 2018 the organization upgraded its puppy cam to five high-definition cameras, three inside the Puppy Enrichment Center and two outdoors, and explore.org lists several WCC cameras today, from a whelping room to an outdoor puppy pen.
Boyds itself is a small railroad community in Montgomery County, home to 9,538 people at the 2020 census and about 43 kilometers (27 miles) from Washington, D.C. It is named after Colonel James Alexander Boyd, a Scottish immigrant and Baltimore and Ohio Railroad engineer who housed the crews building the Metropolitan Branch after the Civil War. Trains began running in 1873, and MARC commuter trains on the Brunswick Line still stop in town.
Weather and Climate in Boyds, Maryland
The playroom is indoors, so snow and summer storms never reach the camera. What changes the picture is the litter in residence, from 4-week-olds new to the playroom to ten-week-olds about to leave for their training families. Outside, Boyds has four distinct seasons. January afternoons average about 6 C (42 F) and nights fall to around -3 C (27 F). Spring warms quickly, from highs near 12 C (54 F) in March to about 23 C (74 F) in May.
Summers are hot. July highs average about 31 C (88 F) with nights near 21 C (69 F), and July and September are usually the wettest months, each bringing roughly 140 to 150 millimeters (5.5 to 5.9 inches) of rain. Fall cools gently, with October highs near 20 C (68 F) and November afternoons around 13 C (55 F).

Seneca Creek State Park borders the Healing Quarters. Clopper Lake, 36 hectares (90 acres) and about 5.5 meters (18 feet) deep on average, has boating and fishing, and the park also has a disc golf course and picnic areas.
