About Antigonish

Antigonish is a town of 4,656 people (2021 census) and the county town of Antigonish County, about 160 kilometers (100 miles) northeast of Halifax. The town was founded in 1784 by Lieutenant Colonel Timothy Hierlihy of the Royal Nova Scotia Volunteer Regiment. The name comes from the Mi’kmaq language, although its original meaning has been lost over two centuries of changes to the language.

The town is best known for St. Francis Xavier University, which began in 1853 as the College of East Bay in Arichat, Cape Breton, and moved to Antigonish in 1855. Antigonish is also home to the Antigonish Highland Games, first held in 1863 and described as the oldest continuous Highland games outside Scotland.
