The Niagara Falls Webcam looks down on the Horseshoe Falls from the Canadian side, high above the promenade at Table Rock. The curve of the crest fills most of the frame, with the pale green lip of the water where it turns over the edge and a column of mist climbing back up through it. Across the international border to the left are Goat Island and Terrapin Point on the New York shore. The camera sits far enough back to hold the entire 790 meter (2,592 foot) crestline in one shot. Mist changes the picture hour to hour, burying the plunge pool one minute and thinning to show the tour boats the next.

About Niagara Falls

Niagara Falls is a group of three waterfalls at the southern end of the Niagara Gorge, on the boundary between Ontario and New York. Horseshoe Falls, the one in frame, straddles that boundary; the smaller American Falls and Bridal Veil Falls lie entirely on the New York side. The Niagara River carries the outflow of Lake Erie down to Lake Ontario, dropping about 57 meters (187 feet) at the Horseshoe crest. American Falls drops between 21 and 30 meters (69 and 98 feet) onto the boulder pile at its base.

Flow is the other number that matters. The average annual rate over the crest is 2,400 cubic meters per second (85,000 cubic feet per second), and through the summer at least 2,800 cubic meters per second (99,000 cubic feet per second) come down, roughly 90 percent of it over Horseshoe Falls. The rest is diverted upstream to hydroelectric stations, which is why the camera can look different after dark: flow is halved at night and through the winter low season, to a minimum of 1,400 cubic meters per second (49,000 cubic feet per second). The green tint in the water is rock flour and dissolved salts, an estimated 60 tonnes a minute, ground out of the riverbed by the current.

The parkland at the lower right of the frame is Queen Victoria Park, opened in 1887 by the Niagara Parks Commission, which Ontario created in 1885 to keep the shoreline out of private hands. New York acted the same year with the Niagara Reservation, now Niagara Falls State Park and the oldest state park in the United States. Niagara Falls, Ontario recorded 94,415 residents in 2021. Weather and Climate in Niagara Falls

The climate is humid continental, moderated by the surrounding lakes. January averages a high of minus 0.4 C (31 F) and a low of minus 7.8 C (18 F), and the camera is at its most interesting in that stretch: spray freezes onto the railings and trees along the rim, ice collars build at the brink, and the gorge below fills with broken ice. Annual snowfall runs to 154 centimeters (61 inches), with lake effect snow off both Erie and Ontario. Thaws are common all the same, and the city holds the Canadian record for the warmest January temperature, 22.2 C (72 F) on January 26, 1950.

Flow follows the level of Lake Erie, so it usually peaks in late spring or early summer, which is also when the mist cloud is at its largest. July averages a high of 27.4 C (81.3 F) and a low of 17 C (62.6 F), warm and humid. Spring and autumn sit in between, with April highs near 12.5 C (54.5 F) and October highs near 15.9 C (60.5 F), and autumn turns the park trees along the parkway. Gulls are a winter fixture: about 100,000 spend the season on the river.

Table Rock Centre, the building at the lower right of the shot, is the entrance to Journey Behind the Falls, where an elevator drops 38 meters (125 feet) to tunnels cut through the bedrock 130 years ago, ending at an observation deck beside the base of the Horseshoe. Niagara City Cruises boats leave from below the same building and are often the small shapes at the foot of the falls on camera. Up the hill in the Fallsview district, the Skylon Tower has been open since October 1965 and stands 160 meters (520 feet) above street level. Clifton Hill runs north from the parkway with the 53 meter (175 foot) Niagara SkyWheel at its center, and downriver the Whirlpool Aero Car has crossed the Niagara Whirlpool since 1916.

On the New York side, Niagara Falls State Park was laid out by Frederick Law Olmsted and covers Goat Island and Luna Island. Terrapin Point, at the western tip of Goat Island, looks straight along the Horseshoe crest and sits at the upper left of the camera frame. Cave of the Winds takes a lift down into the gorge and onto wooden decks in front of Bridal Veil Falls, where wind driven by the water can reach 109 kilometers per hour (68 miles per hour). Maid of the Mist has run from the American shore since 1846 and switched to battery electric boats in 2020.
