Norwegian Joy Webcam – Bow Camera on a Breakaway Plus Ship

About this webcam

The Norwegian Joy Webcam is a forward-facing camera mounted high above the bow of Norwegian Joy, a Breakaway Plus class ship sailing for Norwegian Cruise Line. It looks straight down the length of the forward decks, across the helicopter winching circle painted on the bow, and out over the water ahead of the ship. Norwegian Cruise Line publishes the frame as a still image that it refreshes through the day, so the scene changes with the voyage: open ocean stretching to the horizon, a coastline or mountain range sliding past on one side, or the approach to a harbor with tugs and other ships close by. Weather reads clearly from this height. Rain streaks the lens, fog flattens the sea into a grey sheet, and on a clear day the water off the bow turns a deep blue. Crew members occasionally cross the deck below.

About Norwegian Joy

Norwegian Joy is the second ship of the Breakaway Plus class, following her sister Norwegian Escape. Meyer Werft built her at Papenburg in Germany as yard number 694, the twelfth ship the German yard had delivered to Norwegian Cruise Line. Her keel was laid on 5 April 2016, and the build was interrupted by two fires that autumn, in September and October, both traced to welding work. She was floated out on 4 March 2017, handed over on 27 April 2017 and christened on 27 June 2017, with the Chinese singer Wang Leehom as her sponsor.

The ship was designed from the outset for the Chinese market. Her inaugural sailing left on 28 June 2017, and for almost two years she ran four and five day voyages from Shanghai to ports in Japan, with Tianjin as a second homeport. Her hull art, by the Chinese artist Tan Ping, was inspired by the phoenix. At 167,725 gross tonnage and 333.46 meters (1,094 feet) long, she carries up to 4,622 passengers across 20 decks, with a crew of 1,821. She is registered in Nassau and flies the flag of the Bahamas.

What Can You See on the Norwegian Joy Webcam?

The Norwegian Joy Webcam sits well above the forecastle, so the bottom of the frame is taken up by the ship herself: the curved white railings of the bow, the grey helideck with its yellow winching circle and deck lettering, a set of stairs leading down to the deck below, and the canvas shade sails over the deck below. Everything above that is water. Out at sea, the horizon runs across the upper part of the frame, and the light shifts from flat grey under low cloud to bright glare when the sun is ahead of the ship. Near land, headlands, islands and mountain ridges appear off the bow, and in port the view can fill with a quayside, a cruise terminal or another ship berthed alongside. A small caption in the top corner carries the ship’s name and the date and time the frame was taken.

From Shanghai to North America

Norwegian Cruise Line announced in July 2018 that Norwegian Joy would leave China, and in 2019 she went into a 21 day dry dock in Singapore for a refurbishment reported at 50 million US dollars. The work, carried out with the marine outfitter MJM Marine, redesigned her public rooms for North American guests, added new restaurants and bars, and extended the go-kart race track on her upper decks, which had opened with a fleet of 20 karts when she was built.

After the refit she moved to Seattle and a summer program of Alaska cruises, and in later seasons she has also sailed the Mexican Riviera, the Caribbean, Bermuda and the Canadian Maritimes, with Miami as her winter base. She went back into dry dock in Rotterdam in January 2024 for further renovation. Below the waterline, she is driven by two ABB Azipod XO pods with a combined 40 megawatts of power, fed by five main engines, and she is fitted with an air lubrication system that reduces drag along the hull. Her top speed is 25 knots (46 km/h / 29 mph).
