About this webcam

The Penafiel Bird Feeder Webcam watches a stone drinking fountain and a log set with halved fruit inside the Pago de Carraovejas wine estate, just outside Penafiel in the Spanish province of Valladolid. Past the feeder, rows of vines run downhill to pale farm fields, young pines close in on both sides, and Penafiel Castle stretches along the top of its hill on the skyline. The town council put the camera here as a tourism and nature project, so the shot is built around two subjects at once: the birds that drop in to drink and feed, and one of the best-known castles in Castile and Leon. Visits come in bursts, and long quiet spells with nothing moving at the basin are normal. The light on the castle and the vineyard keeps changing through the day either way.

About Penafiel and the Pago de Carraovejas Feeder

This is Camera 62 in the network run by Directo Natura, a Spanish operator of live nature cameras that streams feeders, ponds and drinking pools from Cantabria to Badajoz. Its description places the feeder inside an estate of exceptional biodiversity, looking over the vineyard toward the castle, and credits the project to the Ayuntamiento de Penafiel, the town council, as a way to promote tourism and introduce people to the local countryside. The credit strip along the bottom of the stream lists funding from the European Union’s NextGenerationEU program through Spain’s Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan, alongside the regional government of Castile and Leon. The estate’s winery stands about 2.5 kilometers (1.6 miles) east of the castle, and from the feeder the fortress sits small on the horizon rather than filling the frame.

The town itself has 5,188 people (2024) and sits at an elevation of 754 meters (2,474 feet), roughly 54 kilometers (33 miles) east of Valladolid in a straight line. It lies at the heart of the Ribera del Duero wine region, and in the Middle Ages it was important enough to support as many as 19 churches.

The castle on the skyline is the reason most people know the name. Construction began in the 10th century, and the walls run 210 meters (689 feet) long but only 33 meters (108 feet) wide, which gives the fortress the outline of a ship. The keep in the middle rises more than 30 meters (98 feet), carries eight turrets and stands between two courtyards. Built from Campaspero stone, the castle overlooks the valleys of the Duraton and Botijas rivers and was declared a National Monument in 1917.

Weather and Climate in Penafiel

This is a dry inland climate with hot summers and cold nights for much of the year. Ten years of Open-Meteo data for the estate (2016 to 2025) put July and August highs at about 31 C (88 F), with nights around 15 to 16 C (59 to 61 F). Those two months bring only about 7 millimeters (0.3 inches) of rain each, so summer skies over the vineyard are usually clear. In early October the vines in front of the feeder were still green, while the fields beyond had already turned pale.

Winter is cold rather than wet. January highs average about 9 C (48 F) and nights sit close to 0 C (32 F), so frosty mornings on the grass around the basin are likely in the coldest weeks. The wettest months are November, at about 65 millimeters (2.6 inches), and March and April, at about 60 millimeters (2.4 inches) each, for an annual total near 490 millimeters (19 inches). Spring warms quickly, from about 17 C (63 F) in April to 21 C (70 F) in May, and that is when the bare winter vines come back into leaf. October still averages about 20 C (68 F) at midday.

Things to Do Near Penafiel

The castle is the obvious first stop, and its south courtyard houses the Museo Provincial del Vino, the provincial wine museum. The Ribera del Duero Wine Route lists it among its stops. Down in the town, the Plaza del Coso is a medieval square used for bullfights, ringed by private houses whose windows, balconies and doorways belong to the town whenever a bullfight is held. The tourism office is on the square itself. On Friday and Saturday nights in June, July and August, the square hosts a videomapping light and sound show, with performances from 10:45 pm.

The calendar adds two more reasons to visit. The Fiesta de la Vendimia, the grape harvest festival, takes place in early October, and its 35th edition ran from 2 to 4 October 2026. The patron saint festivities, the Fiestas de Nuestra Senora y San Roque, ran from 14 to 18 August in 2026. Wildlife fans can also follow the local storks: Directo Natura streams a second camera here, Camera 72, pointed at them.
