About this webcam

The Claromeco Webcam looks along the beach at Claromeco, a small resort town on the Atlantic coast of Buenos Aires Province, Argentina. The main camera is mounted on the wooden deck of a beach building raised above the sand, so the frame runs a long way down the shore. Lines of wooden sand fencing sit half buried in the foreground, an orange lifeguard hut on stilts stands beside a flagpole flying the Argentine flag, and white bands of surf roll in on the left. Far along the beach, the apartment blocks of the waterfront rise at the end of the frame. A second camera, labeled La Bajada, faces straight out to sea. Wind moves a lot of sand here, and the ripples and drifts around the fences can look different from one day to the next.

About Claromeco

Claromeco sits on the coast of the Partido de Tres Arroyos, 71 kilometers (44 miles) south of the city of Tres Arroyos and about 560 kilometers (348 miles) from Buenos Aires, a drive of six to seven hours. The town was founded on November 9, 1920, on land owned by the Bellocq family, who petitioned the government to establish a town there. It is still small: the 2001 census counted 1,947 residents. Local accounts trace the name to the Mapuche language, usually translated as three streams with rushes.

The beach is the reason the town exists. Around 25 kilometers (15.5 miles) of open sand run along this part of the coast, and on some stretches vehicles are allowed onto the beach under local rules, which explains the tire tracks visible on the La Bajada camera. At the eastern end of town, on the Avenida Costanera, stands the Faro Claromeco, a lighthouse 54 meters (177 feet) tall that was built in 1921 and first lit in 1922. Climbing it takes 278 steps.

The Arroyo Claromeco crosses the area and drops over a series of small falls before it reaches the sea. On the far side of the stream lies Dunamar, a neighboring resort with a dune station and tree nursery planted with pines, eucalyptus, poplars, acacias and tamarisks. The Claromeco Municipal Nature Reserve protects 11.63 square kilometers (4.49 square miles) of coastal wetland and sand dunes.

Weather and Climate in Claromeco

Summer, from December to February, brings afternoon highs of about 25 to 27 C (77 to 81 F) and nights around 15 to 17 C (59 to 63 F). The sea keeps the coast a little cooler than the farmland inland, where Tres Arroyos averages January highs of 29.4 C (84.9 F). Autumn cools steadily, from highs near 24 C (75 F) in March to about 16 C (60 F) in May, and April is one of the wettest months at roughly 80 millimeters (3.1 inches) of rain. Winter, from June to August, is cool, with highs of 12 to 14 C (54 to 58 F) and lows of 5 to 7 C (41 to 45 F).

Spring warms from about 16 C (61 F) in September to 22 C (72 F) in November. Rain is spread across the year rather than packed into one season, from about 34 millimeters (1.3 inches) in September to around 80 millimeters (3.1 inches) in April and November. At this latitude daylight swings widely, from nearly 15 hours in late December to about 9.5 hours in late June. On overcast days the sea turns a churned gray brown on camera, the breakers show up as broad white bands, and the wind leaves fresh ripples across the sand in front of the deck.

Things to Do Near Claromeco

The Faro Claromeco is the obvious first stop, with 278 steps up to a viewpoint over the coast and the town. Back at sea level, the Arroyo Claromeco is the other meeting point: its banks have walks and green spaces, kayaking and rowing are possible on the water, and locals gather there to watch the sunset. Sport fishing is practiced both from the beach and in the stream.

Across the stream in Dunamar, the dunes and the forest of the dune station are the setting for horseback rides, quad tours across the sand and sandboarding on the larger dunes. Kitesurfing and other water sports take place off the beach, and bird watching is another draw, with the wetlands of the nature reserve close by. In town, the Plaza Luis Piedra Buena hosts an artisan market, and the Espacio de Arte Quelaromeco is the local art and cultural space.
