About this webcam

The Ingeniero White Webcam looks over the roundabout where Avenida San Martin meets Avenida Santiago Dasso, in the old port town of Ingeniero White on the edge of Bahia Blanca, Argentina. A grassy island ringed with black and white curbs fills the middle of the frame, with a three-story brick corner building, a yellow storefront and a row of low houses behind it. Beyond the circle, a big I-heart-W sign in orange letters stands in a small plaza beside a blue basin, and a long wall lined with local business signs runs off to the right. Cars, pickups and the odd cyclist work their way around the junction through the day, and the light swings from flat grey under cloud to hard sun.

About Ingeniero White

Ingeniero White is the port district of Bahia Blanca, about 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) from the city center on the Bahia Blanca estuary, and it sits just 5 meters (16 feet) above sea level. The town dates its founding to September 26, 1885, when the first pier in the region was built, a few years after the Southern Railway (Ferrocarril del Sur) set up a small port here. It takes its name from Guillermo White, one of the first engineers to graduate from the University of Buenos Aires, named by decree of President Julio Argentino Roca. The 2022 census counted 11,933 residents, down slightly from 12,489 in 2010.

The port grew quickly as the main outlet for grain from the Pampas and was expanded in 1905, when it could no longer keep up with the cargo arriving. Today the docks handle cereals and their by-products, frozen fruit and fish and general cargo, and the town is also home to the Bahia Blanca petrochemical complex, where PBB Polisur, Profertil, Dow, Compania Mega and Unipar Indupa run plants. The camera belongs to Amigos de White, a local community group, and is mounted at the corner by Heladeria Berezia, an ice cream shop.

What you see on the Ingeniero White Webcam is the town’s everyday traffic. Drivers enter the circle from the crossings at the left and front of the picture, a keep-right sign stands at the island’s edge, and a pale green lamp post rises from its center. Palm trees show above the rooftops on the left, taller buildings stand on the horizon, and power and phone lines crisscross the sky above the junction. A date and time stamp in the top right corner runs on local time, three hours behind UTC.

Weather and Climate in Ingeniero White

Ingeniero White shares the climate of Bahia Blanca, which swings widely between seasons, and the seasons run opposite to North America and Europe. January is the height of summer, with average highs of 31.2 C (88 F) and lows of 16.3 C (61 F), and most of the year’s 645 millimeters (25.4 inches) of rain falls in the warm months. Autumn and spring sit close together: April averages 22.0 C (72 F) by day and 9.4 C (49 F) at night, and October 22.1 C (72 F) and 8.5 C (47 F).

July is the coldest month, with highs of 13.9 C (57 F) and lows of 2.4 C (36 F), yet snow is rare at about 0.2 days a year. Wind is the constant here. It averages 24 kilometers per hour (15 mph) through the year, mostly from the north and northwest, and on camera it shows in swaying wires, bending trees and fast-moving cloud. Daylight runs longest around the December solstice and shortest in June, so the junction spends far more of the winter day in darkness.

Things to Do Near Ingeniero White

The Port Pathway (Paseo Portuario) links most of the town’s sights on foot. It starts at the Teatro de Ingeniero White, housed in the restored building of the Italian workers’ society Unione Operai, and passes the Tulio Angelozzi amphitheater on the way to the Port Museum (Museo del Puerto). Local residents founded the museum in 1987 to tell the story of the town and its docks, and an old wooden fishing boat sits in its garden. Nearby, the Ferrowhite workshop museum shows railway and port tools that workers kept safe during the privatizations of the 1990s, inside the old repair shop of the General San Martin power station.

That power station is the landmark known as El Castillo, the Castle. Built in 1932 in reinforced concrete and styled like a Tudor castle, it supplied Bahia Blanca with electricity for 56 years and is now a provincial and national historic monument. The route carries on past the first port power plant and the Luis Piedra Buena thermal power station to the Balcon al Mar lookout over the estuary. The biggest date on the local calendar is the National Shrimp and Prawn Festival (Fiesta Nacional del Camaron y Langostino), held over four days each Holy Week, which draws more than 350,000 people.
