About this webcam

The Tandil Webcam looks southeast across Tandil, a city of about 145,000 people in the hill country of Buenos Aires Province, Argentina. Mounted about 20 meters (66 feet) above the ground, the camera takes in a wide spread of red tile and metal roofs, back gardens and apartment blocks, with a cluster of taller towers on the left and a chain of low, rounded hills closing the horizon. Those are the hills of the Tandilia system, in which the city sits. The camera is run by MeteoTandil, a local weather station, so the picture works as a sky watch too: cloud gathering over the hills, rain moving through, and the light shifting across the rooftops from morning until evening.

About Tandil

Tandil began on April 4, 1823, as a fort named Fuerte Independencia, or Fort Independence, and the 2022 census counted 145,575 residents. The city lies about 360 kilometers (220 miles) south-southwest of Buenos Aires. Its best-known symbol is the Piedra Movediza, the “moving stone”, a balanced rock that fell and broke on February 29, 1912. A replica was installed in May 2007.

MeteoTandil is a weather station website for the city. The station lists its position on the northwest side of Tandil at 190 meters (623 feet) above sea level, and the channel describes the camera as mounted 20 meters up and pointing southeast, so the view runs across the residential neighborhoods toward the center and the hills beyond. The Twitch channel that carries the stream was opened in January 2024.

In the lower left, a pale apartment block with two white water tanks on its roof stands beside red tile roofs and a small yard where cars park. Behind it, low houses and garden trees spread toward the skyline, broken here and there by small apartment buildings. The tallest towers gather on the left side of the frame, and the hills run along the whole horizon. After dark, streetlights spread across the city and a lit hilltop shows near the center of the view.

Weather and Climate in Tandil

The climate is mild, with four clear seasons. January is the warmest month, with average highs of 28.4 C (83 F) and lows of 13.3 C (56 F), so warm afternoons usually give way to cool nights. April brings autumn at about 20.5 C (69 F) by day and 7.4 C (45 F) after dark. July is the coldest month, averaging 12.5 C (54.5 F) in the afternoon and 1.1 C (34 F) at night, close to freezing. October, in spring, averages 19.9 C (68 F) and 6.8 C (44 F), and the bare trees in the gardens below the camera fill out with leaves as the season goes on.

Annual precipitation averages 912.6 millimeters (35.9 inches). Snow is rare, with about 0.2 snowy days a year in the long-term record, so a white skyline on this camera is a real event. Because a weather station runs the camera, a strip along the bottom of the picture carries its own readings: the latest high and low temperatures with the time each was recorded, rainfall in millimeters, the UV index and solar radiation in watts per square meter.

Things to Do Near Tandil

Parque Independencia was opened in 1923 for the city’s centenary, and its Moorish-style castle, the Castillo Morisco, stands at the park’s viewpoint at 286.5 meters (940 feet). Lago del Fuerte, a lake formed by a dam on the Langueyu River at the edge of town, has boat rental, green space along the shore and an artificial geyser. El Calvario, a religious complex on a hill inaugurated in 1943, has long drawn pilgrims, and the Piedra Movediza replica is one of the city’s main sights.

At Cerro El Centinela, a chairlift covers an aerial route of 1,260 meters (4,134 feet) over pine forest and old quarries, and hiking trails lead to El Centinela, a rock formation that is another local landmark. The Reserva Natural Sierra del Tigre protects 150 hectares (371 acres) of hills, with trails, old quarries and the stone walls built by the first European stonemasons to work in Tandil. The area is also known for its countryside produce, especially salami and cheese.
